So I recently posted the same concerns I mentioned in a thread here on College Confidential as well and all I got were people being incredibly discouraging and saying my stats and work was mediocre rather than giving constructive support and advice. Seeing the difference between these two platforms has made me incredibly more appreciative of SDN and the pre-med threads here bc everyone gives solid, supportive, and constructive advice for med school. The competitiveness on CC is incredibly toxic and will ruin your self esteem, so just wanted to warn the others to avoid the site if you can. I mean I swear I saw someone saying that a 3.7 GPA is not good enough for med school. Makes no sense to me. People are way too quick to attack you and its so easy to feel inadequate.

If you want even more support head on over to reddit. You have a weird observation. We here on SDN are known for our toxic-yet-accurate climate. Glad to hear you got the help you needed!

I kindof agree with @awwa19 here. There are a few bad apples but for the most part the advice I've been given, while sometimes brutal, is always accompanied with ways to improve and genuine advice. Reddit is also supportive, but I think SDN is more constructive and there are fewer dicks cause they get shut down pretty fast.

I remember applying to college and posting on college confidential. Half the posts responding to my WAMC were extremely toxic and misinformed. Like a bunch of tiger moms dissuading others from applying to top schools so their kid has a higher chance to get in. I had no idea CC had a pre-med forum, that website is so cringey.

Wow this is so sad, threads dedicated to applicants and their parents xD, and usernames literally saying "mom of this other user". So cringey.

I used that site while applying for undergrad too and it was incredibly annoying to see people with pretty amazing stats put others down and it didn’t bother me much then bc I didn’t see it that often however as soon as I saw the med threads I was put off by it immediately. I mean I literally had someone say “you’re not premed material, every premed has a dream, you’re not even up to the par.” Here people are honest and blunt and straightforward yet STILL encouraging and informative. Sadly I can’t even delete my threads or account off there. So I just gotta make the intention to never look there again to preserve my remaining self confidence lol.

CC seems super toxic, while Redditors get butthurt too easily. I can't tell you how many times this week on Reddit I've seen people post "My MCAT is in 1 week I'm scoring in the 480s, goal of 515 and I've only been studying for 2 weeks. How can I improve my score in 1 week help!". And then they'll downvote you for suggesting to maybe put more time than 2 weeks into the most important exam of your life to date.

Some people on med Twitter also get a little butthurt . I know a girl who has a less than 2.5 undergrad gpa and like 3.7 gpa for masters. I don’t know her Mcat score. She’s failed to get in twice already. She’s like I’ll do whatever it takes to get in and no matter how much times it takes . She’s also considering Caribbean or schools in Ireland. I told her she would have a hard time matching into anything competitive and she says she doesn’t believe me. At this point I would just encourage her to get another goal but people still support her “dreams”.

I used to be a regular on college confidential lol. Always cringed at the parent section.

Never heard of college confidential...just took a look at the parent section...if my parents had just 10% of that motivation to be involved in my education then I would likely have not gone into the military. Goddamn.

Edit: not saying this is a good thing to be so involved lol

well tbh you never know how life will work out for someone. while yeah that sounds like sane advice, maybe she'll work on other things and come back to medicine later in life. medical school is inclusive of all ages. we should encourage people to pursue their dreams though, even if they're taking a path less traveled.

Yeah but sometimes you need to know when to fold and quit as said by a wise adcom on here. I don't mind her pursuing her dreams but if she doesn't get in when she applies for the third time I'll find it hard to be supportive. It's not that she's taking the path less traveled it's that she's naive and hellbent on something. Sometimes especially if you don't get in after applying three times you need to call it quits.

Tbh sometimes I think redditors don’t take it seriously enough. Some people act like they don’t need to give it their best because taking multiple cycles to get in is normal. Don’t even get me started on fourth time reapplicants giving advice

I mean it's what you get out of your time and experience browsing whatever it is you browse, you know? Coming to sdn is like being inspired by patients, except not everyone on here is sick (maybe that honeybee guy lmao). But for real, it is inspiring and the air of competitiveness is invigorating. yes we are all competing against each other, but raptor and memeboy and the fetal carcinoma and many others make it fun
