E Class 2024 interior

A prototype for a redesigned Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been spotted testing again, in sedan guise.

The current E-Class arrived for the 2017 model year and was given a mid-cycle update for 2021. In Mercedes tradition, the redesigned E-Class should arrive in 2023 as a 2024 model.

It appears the design is taking on a more dynamic look, as the roof line looks a little more sloped at the rear than on the current model. With rumors that both the CLS-Class and GT 4-Door Coupe aren't getting replacements, perhaps designers were free to make the E-Class look a bit sportier.

The platform is the updated version of Mercedes' MRA rear-wheel-drive architecture that debuted in the 2021 S-Class and has since appeared under the 2022 C-Class. The updated platform benefits from weight savings, primarily through increased use of aluminum over steel. This has been made possible due to advanced joining technologies, including aluminum-to-steel welding.

The platform hasn't been designed to fit battery-electric powertrains, though electrified powertrains should be used across the range, including for the eventual E 63 from AMG. The E 63 could potentially end up with the same V-8-based hybrid system that debuted in the 2023 GT 63S E Performance 4-Door Coupe. The system can deliver a max 843 hp and 1,033 lb-ft of torque. However, there have also been rumors the next E 63 might downsize to a 4-cylinder, just like the next C 63.

Given that Mercedes just launched the 2023 EQE electric sedan, and has made a commitment to a full-electric lineup by 2030, this will probably be the last E-Class to feature internal-combustion engines.

A redesigned E-Class Wagon should also be coming, both in regular and All-Terrain guises. Don't look for another generation of the two-door E-Class variants, though. Mercedes is preparing a new CLE-Class to replace both the C-Class and E-Class coupe and convertible models. It should debut about the same time as the new E-Class.

Stay tuned as development continues.

He became the editor within two years, after which he landed a job as the deputy editor at a national publication, where he spent eight years traveling the world, driving, and writing. In his current role as senior editor, he writes news, reviews, scripts, and opinion pieces. When he’s not supposed to be working, you’ll probably find him working. We've seen plenty of next-gen Mercedes E-Class prototypes over the past year or so, but the long roof is a recent addition to the fleet. This marks just our third sighting, and while the car is still wrapped in camouflage, our spy team managed to capture some extremely detailed photos. It's our best look thus far of the long roof in action.

And what do we see? Usually, we pay attention to the front of test vehicles, but this time around we draw your attention to the back. Taillights will extend onto the hatch in a raised section, with the glass looking more angled than ever. It's not extreme as you might find in a coupe-styled vehicle, but it certainly looks like Mercedes-Benz is aiming for some extra aggression with its next wagon.

At the front, things are very much as they are on the E-Class sedan test vehicles we've seen. Compared to the current model, the grille will grow slightly while the headlights shrink, as is the trend with most automakers these days. There will still be a clear separation between the upper and lower openings on the fascia, with prominent vents taking station on both corners. Along the side, we see some curious angles underneath the wrap but they are likely false panels. We expect an evolutionary update to the E-Class, which means a smooth surface with an elegant, arcing beltline.

We've also been fortunate to glimpse the new E-Class interior, albeit briefly. As you might expect, digital displays dominate the dash, and we suspect much of the tech from the current S-Class will be offered here. Our spy sources tell us there will be options to change up the displays, catering to those who prefer smaller layouts as well as buyers wanting a full OLED experience.

More E-Class Wagon Spy Photos:

While the EQE gets its own EV platform, the new E-Class will soldier on with the MRA2 chassis with mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. That could well include a bonkers 671-horsepower Mercedes-AMG E63 estate, though nothing has been confirmed on that front.

At this time, we expect a full reveal to take place in the first half of 2023, debuting as a 2024 model. In the meantime, check out the latest automotive gossip in the Rambling About Cars podcast, available below.
