FOREST FIELD [Phil Vincent] – Mystery & Mayhem [2024]

The last couple of years have proven to be a challenge for FOREST FIELD, the rock combo formed by American Phil Vincent and Dutch musicians Peter Cox and Bart Fleuren. But step by step the recordings for new album ”Mystery & Mayhem” were completed and finally finished, resulting in the most modern sounding Forest Field album to date. It seems this sixth full length album is the first that does not have a [lyrical] theme running through it. Instead it is focusing on delivering the most diverse and in parts most progressive music yet. Still, the key features, melody and musicianship, are Forest Field focus, as always. We not only get the epic 14+ minute ‘Human Jigsaw’, with a stunning middle section plenty us surprisingly twists, but also elaborated tracks like ‘Close Your Eyes’ and ‘Calling Me’. You can rock to tracks like ‘This Girl Like Rain’ or the powerful ‘The Light’. And chill a bit during midtempo number ‘Slipping Away’. ”Mystery & Mayhem” is as diverse as they come and shows a band that withstood the storms to deliver their most complete album to date…

PUSH – On The Run [2024 reissue] *HQ*

Hailing from Denmark, PUSH were one of the bands that kept the melodic hard rock flame alive during the Nineties / early 2000’s. The band now got the rights of all their albums and started by themselves a 2024 reissue campaign as most the CD’s are out of print. “On the Run” is PUSH’s third album and their most polished, melodic and catchy. With a singer shouting like Mike Tramp and a rhythm section ala Bonfire, first song, title track ‘On The Run’ is an excellent piece of classic melodic hard rock and sets the mood for the whole, entertaining album. Lead vocalist and songwriter Martie Peters has been surely inspired by White Lion’s Mike Tramp style, and he owns a similar vocal timbre too – raspy on the rockers and warm when needed. Second track ‘Waiting’ In Live’ confirms the first impression; Push rocks with style, this particular song sonically coming straight from the ’80s, when rock bands knew how to write catchy songs and killer choruses. There’s some wonderful harmony / multi-layered vocals all over this album. Then there’s ‘Too Late’. The melody is so infectious…

LONELY FIRE – The Last Ride [2024] *HQ*

Hailing from Spain, LONELY FIRE is formed by experienced musicians from the local scene. They are releasing debut album titled “The Last Ride” where they distils their love for ’80s AOR / Melodic Rock. Just take a look at the album cover art… However, and while there’s classy keyboard runs and synth swirls, LONELY FIRE sound is quite rocking, driven by strong guitar riffs and the powerful lead voice of Fran Rosique. The music in “The Last Ride” is inspired by the greats form the genre, but LONELY FIRE keeps things updated with a modern style, emphasized by a modern production. At places LONELY FIRE brings to mind early Lionville or Wild Rose, yet, as said, more rocking and grandiose. Just listen to a track like ‘Victory’, multi-layered, in the current Scandinavian style of the genre…

BON JOVI – Countdown: Live In Tokyo NYE 1988/89 [Japan-only release] [2024] HQ *Exclusive*

Here’s in exclusive at 0dayrox the just released by Vivid Sound Records / Straight Music – only in Japan – “Countdown; Live In Tokyo NYE 1988-89“, the BON JOVI concert captured in The New Year’s Eve performance at the Tokyo Dome. That was in fact a festival named ‘Sanyo Heat Beat Live ’89’ featuring a gorgeous combination of Bon Jovi, Ratt, Kingdom Come, and Britny Fox – all bands playing December 31, 1988, and then again January 1st, 1989. The concert was prepared for broadcast on FM and TV, so the audio quality is very good. At the time BON JOVI was at their peak, with their album ‘New Jersey’ at the top of the rock charts, and they were the headliners. All the world-wide hits were performed that night – ‘Bad Medicine’, ‘You Give Love A Bad Name’, ‘Born To Be My Baby’ but also tracks that were radio hits especially in Japan, like ‘Tokyo Road’, ‘Blood On Blood’, ‘I’d Die For You’, etc. The last song of the set is a cover of Rolling Stones “All Over Now,” with all bands performing the song [Bon Jovi, Ratt, Kingdom Come, and Britny Fox] on stage starting the midnight countdown…

ADRENALIN – Twenty-Five Years 1977-2002 [The Music of Adrenalin and DC Drive] *HQ*

With the ADRENALIN album ‘Road Of The Gypsy’ remastered here, also was requested this “Twenty-Five Years 1977-2002“, some kind of a Greatest Hits released by the band themselves. However this is more than that as include rarities, unreleased tracks, and more. Adrenalin was a seven-piece arena rock group assembled by singer Marc Gilbert, guitarists Flash and Michael Romeo, and keyboard player Marc Pastoria. Story tells the band put out an EP in 1983 which widespread popularity ultimately led to a deal with the MCA affiliated Rocshire label [Alcatrazz, Citizen Kane, Tony Carey]. Thus, Adrenalin’s major label debut, entitled ‘American Heart’, emerged in 1984 and was produced by Vini Poncia [Kiss]. Later Adrenalin released ‘Road Of The Gypsy’ in 1986, then in 1987 ex-Grand Funk singer/guitarist Mark Farner enters, who stayed a year and was replaced by singer Joey Hammody. When Adrenalin disbanded Romeo and Pastoria formed DC DRIVE in the early ’90s, which music was pretty much in the same AOR / Melodic Rock vein of Adrenalin. “Twenty-Five Years 1977-2002” features interspersed Adrenalin and DC Drive tracks, all timeless catchy American melodious rock, all remastered by the band…

PEACEFUL MINDS – Til I’m Dying [2024] HQ *Exclusive*

Well, this is a nice find: released with zero promotion, here’s “Til I’m Dying“, the debut album from Swedish new band PEACEFUL MINDS. The release / band caught our attention as features Within Temptation’s guitarist Stefan Helleblad as guest. In fact, Stefan Helleblad is much more than a guest here. PEACEFUL MINDS is the band of Helleblad’s uncle, a veteran musician from the Swedish rock scene. He played a big part in Helleblad starting to play guitar back in the Eighties, taught him the first ever guitar riffs when was 8-years old or so. Now 2024, with all his recording experience and being himself producer and Mixing-Mastering Engineer, Stefan Helleblad not only gave his uncle a hand behind the desk but also playing all the guitar solos in “Til I’m Dying”! And which is PEACEFUL MINDS musical style? Yes, classic ’80 melodic hard rock driven by slick guitars, sweet keys and smooth clean vocals. Musicianship is really good and Helleblad’s production obtained a crisp sound, but if you don’t have good songs that’s irrelevant… well, you’ll be surprised by PEACEFUL MINDS “Til I’m Dying”, a collection of stupendous classic melodic rock with that Scandinavian flavor…

ADRENALIN – Road Of The Gypsy [YesterRock Remaster] *HQ*

A killer mid-80s AOR album if you ask me, “Road Of The Gypsy“, by American combo ADRENALIN, criminally remained unreleased on CD until YesterRock specialists reissued this cult album for the first time in a remastered form. The title song “Road Of The Gypsy” is one of those all-time AOR classics. Originally to be found on the soundtrack of the movie ‘Iron Eagle’, the tune became Adrenalin’s biggest hit. Story tells the band put out an EP in 1983 which widespread popularity ultimately led to a deal with the MCA affiliated Rocshire label [Alcatrazz, Citizen Kane, Tony Carey]. Thus, Adrenalin’s major label debut, entitled ‘American Heart’, emerged in 1984 and was produced by Vini Poncia [Kiss]…

TOMMY DENANDER – Cut In Ice – Revisited 1984-2024 [Pride & Joy Music Classixx Vol. 7] HQ *Exclusive*

Uber talented Scandinavian musician, songwriter, producer TOMMY DENANDER brings 40 year career full circle. When only 15 years old, he signed his first record contract with Swedish hard rock band ATC with Polygram/Vertigo who then released their only album entitled ”Cut In Ice” in April 1984. One thing stood out in all reviews and articles and that was the ”wonder-kid” Tommy Denander. Despite the chance of maybe becoming a young rock star and guitar hero Denander followed his heart into the world of becoming a studio musician, songwriter and producer. 40 years later that move proved to be a smart one with having worked on more than 3000 albums, big movies and touring the whole world with some legendary artists. So, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of how it all started Denander decided to re-record the whole ATC album together with new American singer Rob Blake and trusted drummer Neil Anami. It’s a perfect blend of keeping the old school hard rock of the original but with an up-to-date production. The albums is being released by Pride & Joy Music as part of their Classixx series, limited to 500 copies. You can’t go wrong with the material on ”Cut In Ice – Revisited 1984-2024”: this is awesome mid-Eighties Scandi melodic hard rock with ‘that’ type of songwriting, and needless to say, musicianship is top notch. And vocalist Rob Blake is a real find. The guitar work on this album is superb, with impressive leads and powerful riffs to die for. Yes, You’ve seen it first at 0dayrox

IZZ – Collapse the Wave [2024]

IZZ is a innovative New York-based progressive rock ensemble, not only taking elements from that genre, but a varied musical spectrum. Their latest album “Collapse the Wave” melds intricate rhythms and complex harmonies to craft a narrative both compelling and transformative. The album, produced by IZZ keyboardist and vocalist Tom Galgano, features a collection of eleven tracks that challenge conventional perceptions and invite listeners to explore beyond the boundaries of traditional rock. There’s rock&pop elements, art-rock, some hard rock swirling guitar work, and IZZ even invented here a whole new musical category; ‘Prog-Westcoast AOR’ – just listen to the track ‘Soak Up the Sunlight’. If you need to hear something different but definitely rock, then discover IZZ. A lot of styles here on “Collapse the Wave”, always surprising, and entertaining. The production and engineering also shine…

EYNOMIA – Sea of Tears [2024] *HQ*

Following up their debut 2018 album, EYNOMIA, founded by guitarist Chris Bickley [Thunderhead] and female vocalist Phyllis Rutter return with their bandmates bassist Mike LePond [Symphony X], keyboardist Jimmy Pitts [Fountainhead] and drummer Gaetano Nicolosi [Ron Keel Band] with sophomore effort titled “Sea of Tears“. EYNOMIA is a band marketed as symphonic metal, however after first listen, and while “Sea of Tears” has some progressive elements, this is more melodic metal in essence. And a good one. A hint of their sound could be hearing great shouter Michael Vescera appearing as guest in duet – the songwriting here has points in common with Vescera’s solo work and with the many bands he has been part of. ”Sea of Tears” features nine songs that will immerse listeners in lavishly arranged melodic arrangements, embellished by stellar musicianship and elegant vocals. Production is layered and polished, centered around the stirring vocal talents of Phyllis and the melodic originality on the guitar of Bickley. There is also a great incorporation of intricate keyboard parts providing engaging textures…

AXEL RUDI PELL – Risen Symbol [2024] *HQ*

On his 22nd [!] studio album ‘Risen Symbol‘, Bochum-based guitarist and songwriter AXEL RUDI PELL continues to fly the melodic hard rock flag without watering down his style with pseudo-modern stylistic variations orexpendable studio gimmicks. At the same time, he is constantly looking for new influences, exciting inspirations and catchy hooks. One of the bestthings about ARP’s anthems is that they are perfectly tailored to the charismatic voice of frontman Johnny Gioeli. The American vocalist is one of the most eminent rock singers worldwide and, together with Pell, former Rainbow drummer Bobby Rondinelli, and the two longstanding ARP members Ferdy Doernberg [keyboards] and Volker Krawczak [bass], has been an integral part of a perfectly oiled machine for more than ten years, wowing fans and media alike…

SHARK ISLAND – Memento Mori [Live on the Strip] [2024] *HQ*

Vocalist Richard Black was once known as the “King of the Sunset Strip” and SHARK ISLAND was once the house band at the world famous Gazzaris. Signed to Epic Records in 1989 the band released their debut album ‘Law of the Order’, and also saw the tracks ‘Dangerous’ and ‘Father Time’ featured in the movie Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, as well as the song ‘My City’ from the movie Point Break. Richard Black would go on to be part of the short-lived supergroup Contraband which also featured Michael Schenker and members of L.A. Guns, Ratt and Vixen. They released one album in 1991 before disbanding. Shark Island was resurrected in 2005 releasing the album ‘Gathering of the Faithful’ in 2006. In 2018 the band started work on next CD ‘Bloodline’. Now SHARK ISLAND reclaims their spot on the Sunset Strip with ”MEMENTO MORI – Live On The Strip”. Hosted by Sirius XM’s Eddie Trunk and recorded at the world-famous Whisky A-Go-Go on April 22nd, 2022, this album kills. Richard and the guys give you more than an hours’ worth of classics like “Paris Calling”, “Read My Lips”, and their cover of the Fleetwood Mac song “The Chain”. The recording is excellent – real ‘live’ – and the band rocks raw, in your face. This is how a live album should be recorded and mixed – it’s like if you’re there with the musicians in front of you…

SUNBURST – Manifesto [2024] *HQ*

Elaborated and interesting instrumental parts, intense guitar riffing, soaring melodic vocals and emotional memorable melodies – that’s what made classic progressive metal so enjoyable. And that’s what you’ll find in SUNBURST upcoming new opus “Manifesto“. There are some days where you just want a new album of pure blooded progressive metal – read Dream Theater, Symphony X, Tesseract. It seems like the 2000s were a bastion of this, maybe too much honestly, but it feels like precious few bands make this kind of music today. Yes, Sunburst’s new album ”Manifesto” is a nostalgia trip, though with modern trappings. Sure, maybe the fact that frontman Vasilis Georgiou voice sounds like the combination of Roy Khan [Kamelot] and Mike Andersson [Cloudscape] gives them a boost, too. It certainly makes you feel nostalgic to hear those tones alongside musicians in their youthful prime. There is an undeniable energy and brilliant manipulation of the music going on here that leaves you entranced. The emotion, raw power, and famished passion with which they play is a gift to us…

SHOTGUN MISTRESS – Kings Of The Revolution [2024] *HQ*

Running hard off their very good debut album in 2020 SHOTGUN MISTRESS are set to punch out another season of Aussie hard rock cross L.A. Strip ’80s scene. Their sophomore album “Kings Of The Revolution” kicks some serious ass, and while not ‘revolutionary’ as its title speaks – given that we’ve all probably heard this before – but if you like your hard rock to sound like it’s 1989 yet crucially not to be a dated, spandex-wearing, sexist load of old nonsense that for many sounds awful in 2024, then Shotgun Mistress is the band for you. If you haven’t had the chance to hear Shotgun Mistress yet, this album will leave you in no doubt about the band’s calibre. This is classic hard rock done very, very well, and I am sure Shotgun Mistress’s reputation will continue to build as they kick off their international tours, kicking off tomorrow with a 9-show tour in Japan…
