What are the different models of imprisonment?

how does imprisonment vary across states?
some states have a much higher rate of incarceration: avg rate of imprisonment in the US overall in 2011 was 500/100,000 persons. Louisiana held 867/100,000, Mississippi 686, TX 648, and Maine only 148/100,000 persons. RI, NH, and ND also have low imprisonment rates.
