We loved that the finger sandwiches and quiche were served on individual plates for each person which made it so nice to have our own serving. The fresh fruit salad was the best ever. The desserts were wonderful and everything down to the lemon curd was homemade. Five Star!!

  • TT We had a family Christmas tea and our little one loved her little teacup and her soup...the food was good and the Christmas carols performed by the sons was very enjoyable. I loved the history, but did find it a little expensive, especially the tiny scone and rather skimpy on the sweets.

My daughter [age 5]also joined us for tea, Melissa [our hostess] served her smaller portions and substituted some of the tea sandwiches with peanut butter and jelly, and grilled cheese.

 Jun 11, 2008 This was a fabulous place for an intimate tea. The food was wonderful, yet there were only two choices of tea. The service was very good and included children serving, so be prepared for that. Everything was served on silver and was very elegant.
  • TT Several girlfriends booked a birthday tea for me here. It was DIVINE! We had a lovely, pampered, fun afternoon in one of the grand old ladies of Denver. I highly recommend it.
  • TT I used to work for the Castle Marne, so I've had up close and personal experience serving at the afternoon teas as well as the candlelight dinners. The service and quality goes above and beyond anyone's expectations. Your host or hostess will charm you and amaze you with their extensive knowledge of the city's history.

We actually stayed at the Castlemarne on our wedding night and our tenth anniversary. It is the best! The food was divine. Highly recommend this B&B!

This inn wasn't named Castle Marne by accident. Architect William Lang crafted this true castle a mile east of downtown out of lava stone in 1889 and it remains one of the most distinctive addresses in the entire city. The more you look, the more details jump out at you, from the pagan Green Man carved into the mantel to the stained-glass Peacock Window strutting its stuff on the second floor. A real-estate bust in the 1980s led to the castle's abandonment, until the Peiker family lovingly breathed life into it as a B&B in 1988. A quarter-century later, Castle Marne is one of the best inns in the city, with a nice variety of antique-furnished rooms, and a remarkable study in preservation and restoration.

Cozy, historic, and romantic, the mid-range, nine-room Castle Marne Bed & Breakfast is perfect for couples who prefer a more intimate and personalized experience, loaded with character, over a more bigger, more commercialized hotel experience. Set in Denver’s leafy and residential downtown Capitol Hill area, with its grand historic homes, the bed-and-breakfast is within walking distance of attractions like City Park, as well as a number of restaurants, bars, and concert venues. The included breakfasts are superb, and afternoon tea and nighttime cookies are extra special treats, but the Victoriana-bedecked rooms are small and lack TVs.

Scene

Historic mansion decorated with antiques and traditional Victorian decor

Constructed 125 years ago from lava stone mined in Colorado, the Castle Marne does indeed resemble a small castle from the outside. Inside, the historic mansion has been faithfully restored and is packed with antiques and Denver memorabilia. The parlor area features a beautiful wooden piano and ornate mantel; historic photos, busts, and clocks adorn the rooms; and the many windows are hung with thick velvet curtains. There is no elevator, but a wide grand staircase staircase leads up to the second and third floors. Breakfast is served in the opulent dining room at a long communal dining table topped with silver candlesticks; a social affair, it presents an opportunity to chat with and get to know other guests. Similarly, afternoon tea, served in the parlor, is a convivial event for many guests.

Location

In the historic Capitol Hill area, a downtown residential neighborhood close to restaurants and bars

Located in a residential neighborhood in downtown Denver’s Capitol Hill, Castle Marne Bed and Breakfast is surrounded by other historic homes and is within easy walking distance of many popular restaurants, bars, and concert venues. The busy Colfax Avenue is just a block away, and concert venues such as the Ogden Theatre, the Bluebird, and Fillmore Auditorium are less than a 20-minute walk away. The Denver Zoo is an 11-minute walk from the hotel, City Park is about eight minutes, and the Capitol building is just over a mile away, about a 25-minute walk. By car, popular attractions such as the 16th Street Mall, Denver Art Museum, and Convention Center are less than 10 minutes away. Denver International Airport is about a 35-minute drive from hotel without traffic.

Rooms

Unique and Victorian-styled, but small and lacking TVs; some have private hot tubs

There are nine rooms at the Marne and no two are styled alike, though the decor throughout is a tribute to the building's Victorian origins. Beds are covered with ornate, floral-print quilts and have antique wood or brass frames. Most rooms are relatively small, furnished with antique floor lamps, chairs, and desks, with traditional patterned wallpaper and historical prints on the walls. There are no TVs in the rooms, but all have free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms also vary in size and features; a few have claw-footed tubs with showerheads, while those with jetted tubs oddly situated in the bedroom have a narrow walk-in shower in the bathroom. Some rooms also have a proper hot tub on a private terrace or in a separate room. All rooms come outfitted with bottled water and a pair of plush robes. The Presidential Suite is by far the most spacious and luxurious, equipped with a jetted tub [on elevated step leading to the bathroom] and a large, private balcony. All rooms have private baths, but the Tower Room’s bathroom happens to be down the hall.

Features

Extensive free homemade breakfast, free afternoon tea, free Wi-Fi, full kitchen serving candlelit dinners and other meals, street parking

The Castle Marne offers a cozy, intimate lodging experience with a plentiful breakfast included in all rates, featuring homemade pastries and jams. Afternoon tea is offered for free, and homemade cookies are left out in the parlor before bedtime. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the house, but no TVs. Parking is free, but can be tricky to find on the street. The innkeepers are happy to arrange transportation and restaurant reservations. The Castle also offers gourmet candlelit dinners and four-course tea events on site, both popular with non-hotel guests and which ought to be booked in advance. Note that alcohol is not served on site, but guests can bring their own wine for dinners.
