Did they change actors in blacklist?

The Blacklist Season 9 has returned, but the series is missing one of its main characters. Megan Boone will not be returning for the series’s new season. Boone has been playing Liz Keen since the show began. Her exit from the show came as a surprise to many fans. There is plenty of speculation, but what’s the real reason Boone left The Blacklist?

How can ‘The Blacklist’ continue without Liz?

Megan Boone has played Liz on The Blacklist for almost a decade. When fans first met her, Liz was an ambitious FBI profiler. Her story became tangled with criminal mastermind Raymond Reddington, played by James Spader. Reddington turned himself in to the FBI to help them catch high-profile criminals in the hopes of protecting Liz.

“This show has created an incredibly unique life for me,” Boone said in an interview with ClubhouseConvos. “It’s been an exercise that has been incredibly liberating, incredibly fulfilling. We all have the audience to thank.”

Now Boone is bidding farewell to The Blacklist, but the show will continue to follow the FBI task force as they hunt down blacklisters in honor of Liz’s memory.

Why did Megan Boone leave ‘The Blacklist’?

Although it may have been surprising to fans, Boone’s exit did not come as a shock to the cast and crew. The decision for Boone to leave the show came well before The Blacklist was renewed for season 9, Deadline reports. This gave the writers time to figure out an appropriate end for Liz.

In the final episode of The Blacklist Season 8, Liz was shot in the back by one of Townsend’s men. She died in Reddington’s arms while her life flashed before her eyes. Liz’s death was heartbreaking, even to viewers who weren’t big fans of the character.

Boone’s decision to leave The Blacklist came from a desire to work on other projects. In fact, Boone has wasted no time making big moves in her career. Not long after her exit from the show, Boone launched a production company called Weird Sister, closing a first-look deal with Sony Pictures Television.

“I am beyond excited to have a home at SPTV where I can branch out and continue to work with this incredible team,” Boone told Deadline. “They have been instrumental in my career, and fundamentally believe in my vision for Weird Sister. I’m thrilled for this new chapter.”

Is Liz Keen really dead in ‘The Blacklist’ Season 9?

The Blacklist is well-known for “killing off” characters, only for them to return in a later season. It’s no wonder that some fans believe that Liz isn’t really dead in The Blacklist Season 9.  “I didn’t see her die. I only saw an unconscious Liz. They’ve pulled too many of these stunts,” a fan wrote on Reddit.

It’s definitely not impossible that The Blacklist Season 9 will reveal that Liz is alive. However, even if Liz is alive, fans shouldn’t expect to be seeing Boone this season. The 38-year-old actor publicly said her goodbyes to the show, and it looks like she has a lot on her plate.

The Blacklist Season 9 returns after the exit of several major players. Creator Jon Bokenkamp, as well as star Megan Boone, did not return for the new season, and things definitely feel different in the new season. Fans have noticed changes in The Blacklist Season 9, and there are a few things they aren’t too happy about.

Why did Jon Bokenkamp leave ‘The Blacklist’?

Actor Megan Boone played Liz Keen on The Blacklist since the beginning. In June 2021 she announced her exit from the show prior to season 9. Boone left The Blacklist to work on other projects. In the same month, creator Jon Bokenkamp also announced that he would not return.

Bokenkamp left a lengthy note to fans of The Blacklist on Twitter. “I love this show with all of my heart, and it been an incredible journey, but after eight years I feel its time for me to step out of my comfort zone, try something new, and explore a few of the other characters and stories that have been crawling around in my head,” he wrote.

Bokenkamp described the “mixed emotions” he was feeling about leaving the show. Things are definitely different without Boone and Bokenkamp in The Blacklist Season 9, and fans have their own opinions about the changes that have come about.

Fans aren’t happy about these changes in ‘The Blacklist’ Season 9

The Blacklist Season 9 has changed in quite a few ways. “No matter how I feel about the writing, characters, or the dragging out of the central mystery for way too long, I believe Jon brought a feel to TBL that left with him,” a fan wrote on Reddit.

“There was a darkness to both the blacklisters and the humor that I believe came from him and is noticeably absent. And although the perfection of the music [one of my favorite things about the show] has been lacking in recent seasons, it is completely gone now,” they continued.

It’s worthwhile to point out that Bokenkamp is not the only person involved in the writing of The Blacklist. Changes in The Blacklist Season 9 could stem from other factors besides his exit. Boone’s exit has certainly had a role in the different feel of this season. Though many viewers didn’t love Liz, it’s hard to deny she was an important part of the show.

“Maybe it’s not the lack of JB so much as the lack of Liz and the overall mythology?” a fan proposed on the same Reddit thread. “I know people claim to be over that, but if they’ve really dumped 8 seasons of mythology and started over with something new, that isn’t going to be an easy transition. That could be the difference you’re seeing too.”

Will Jon Bokenkamp ever return to ‘The Blacklist’?

It seems unlikely that Bokenkamp will ever return to The Blacklist. Both he and Boone have expressed desires to work on other projects that will likely keep them busy for years to come. Furthermore, it’s not clear how many seasons The Blacklist has left. Season 10 has not yet been confirmed, though there’s a good chance that it will happen as long as James Spader sticks around. For now, it seems like Bokenkamp won’t be coming back.

It's an observation that if it holds up could mean the pandemic backlog of too many open jobs and too few workers may be on the verge of thawing, with implications for the path of inflation, wages, and the Fed's own policy debates.
