Features

The 2023 Dodge Charger is expected to arrive with 5 trim levels like the last year’s model which are SXT, Sport, G/T, Scatpack, and the SRT Hellcat. Both the Scatpack and the Hellcat will be reviewed separately. Coming to the 2023 Charger, the sedan will start with the basic SXT trim level that, despite being the base trim, comes loaded with features such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a two-zone climate control, and power-operated front seat adjustment among others. While the base SXT and the upper GT trims get a basic 3.6-liter V6, the R/T gets a bigger 5.7-liter V8 through which more power and torque come into play. The R/T builds up on the GT trim and swaps out the regular exhaust for an active unit along with getting a trim-specific wheel design.

The base SXT trim almost justifies its price tag due to the solid set of standard features on offer. However, the GT trim is recommended for a sportier experience over the base model with a reasonable increase in price. The more powerful R/T trim is best for having that classy V8 experience and a couple of extra features such as a unique wheel design and an active exhaust system.

Release Date

The 2023 Dodge Charger is expected to be released by fall 2022. However, no official release date has been confirmed by the brand yet.

Engine and Performance

The 2023 Dodge Charger will remain majorly unchanged hence, its powertrain options will also be carried over from the current model year as well. The base SXT and the GT trims will be powered by the trusted 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 motor and it is good for 292 horsepower along with 260 lb-ft of torque. The GT trim’s V6 is tuned to push out slightly more power and torque figures of 300 horsepower and 264 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is an 8-speed automatic unit that is standard across the lineup. The base V6 motor feels adequate for day-to-day purposes as well as triple-digit highway cruising speeds. However, the throttle can be quite overly sensitive at times and you might end up spinning the rear wheels while accelerating from a stop. The 8-speed transmission isn’t exactly quite engaging but the shifts are precise and adequately fast.

The R/T trim gets the 5.7-liter V8 under its hood that pushes out a healthy 370 horsepower along with 395 lb-ft of torque. The R/T feels brisk for a fullsize muscle car while the 3.6 V6-equipped models can complete the 0-60mph sprint in under 6.4 seconds. The quarter-mile sprint can be completed by the models with the Pentastar V6 in under 14.9 seconds.

Among the competitors, the Chrysler 300 sedan is powered by the same 3.6-liter V6 from the Charger and has similar power and torque output figures. The Nissan Maxima houses a 3.5-liter V6 that is paired to a CVT unit. Due to that, the Maxima lacks the sporty feel of the Charger and the 300 sedans but is slightly quicker than the FCA duo. The Toyota Avalon is also powered by a 3.5-liter V6 unit but it delivers a healthy 301 horsepower along with 267 lb-ft of torque. However, the Avalon’s power and torque figures do not reflect much on its acceleration timings.

Muscle cars are widely appreciated and preferred due to their tail-happy driving traits, and the Dodge Charger is no different. The sportier suspension setup of the GT trim and the R/T trim helps towards the handling aspect minorly but the RWD layout keeps the Charger tail-happy. The front rotors are vented while the rear rotors are solid ones. Coming to the braking performance, the Charger feels sure-footed while the brakes are applied and under harsh braking scenarios, the sedan comes to a halt within 102 feet, a sports car-like prowess.

The Chrysler 300 sedan is a mechanical twin of the Charger, hence apart from having similar powertrains, the former also shares similar braking hardware with the latter too. However, the 300 sedan is heavier than the Charger and hence has a slightly longer stopping distance. The Nissan Maxima has almost similar-sized rotors to the FCA duo but its stopping distance isn’t official. However, the Maxima is lighter than the Charger and the 300 so we can expect its braking distance to be as good as the rivals here. The Toyota Avalon has slightly smaller rear brake rotors than the rest of the vehicles here but it is also the lightest one here.

The Chrysler 300 has similar fuel economy and driving range numbers to the Dodge Charger. The Nissan Maxima has marginally better city mileage at 20 mpg and combined mileage at 24 mpg but has a slightly smaller gas tank of 18-gallon. The Toyota Avalon takes the lead here with 22 mpg of city mileage and 32 mpg of highway mileage. The combined mileage of the Avalon is rated at 26 mpg. However, the driving range number of the Avalon falls short in front of the rivals here due to its smaller 14.5-gallon gas tank capacity.

Interior

As much as the Dodge Charger is all exciting and muscular on the outside, on the inside, the car is equally modest and ordinary. The 2023 Charger would see no updates on the interior hence we’ll get to see the same rubber-clad cabin once more. However, all the controls within the cabin are well placed and within reach of the driver’s seat. The dashboard design might look primitive as per today’s trend, but it boasts of a highly functional design. The steering wheel carries a comfortable design that offers a perfect grip, even during those lightning-fast inputs in case you decide to go sideways and smoke some rubber instead of a cigar. The Chrysler 300 might be a mechanical twin of the Dodge Charger but on the inside, it’s a lot upscale and better than the latter. The interior is laden with premium materials and the dashboard gets a leather treatment on the lower half with contrasting stitching. The Chrysler 300 always had a special place in this segment due to its design and the latest iteration of the sedan makes things even better. Irrespective of its design, the Chrysler 300 is nearly identical to the Charger in terms of exterior dimensions. The Nissan Maxima looks the most aggressive one here with its sharp styling on the outside. Moreover, the tasteful blacked-out treatment makes the Maxima look more like a sports sedan but on a budget. However, its external dimensions are the lowest when compared to the peers here and its short wheelbase also results in subpar legroom at the rear. The Toyota Avalon used to be a handsome sedan from the brand but Toyota seems to have messed up with the design of the current model of the sedan.
