The new six-speed manual version of the GR Supra is slightly slower than the eight-speed automatic, but it’s loads more fun. Toyota

The Toyota Supra kicked up plenty of dust when it made its return debut three years ago. But while much of the debate centered around its quirky design, even the sports cars fans had to admit to one critical shortfall: a lack of a manual transmission. That’s something the Japanese automaker aims to resolve for 2023—as long as you’re not ordering the base-model four-cylinder version.

With the new model year, Toyota will offer a manual option on all three of its Gazoo Racing-tuned (GR) sports cars: the GR Supra, GR 86 and the all-new GR Corolla. Better yet, the stick comes as a no-cost option on the Supra. It does exact a minor penalty in terms of a factory-estimated 0.3 second dip in the sports coupe’s zero-to-60 times, but it also ups the fun quotient for sports car fans.

Beyond the addition of the manual option, perhaps the biggest change to Supra came in 2021, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six gaining a point to 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. That cut zero-to-60 times down from 4.1 to 3.9 seconds. The manual takes things roughly back to where it began, at 4.2 seconds.

Save the Manuals

That dip is not likely to matter to members of the “save the manual” club. While the six-speed is ever so slightly slower than the eight-speed automatic originally packaged in the Supra, it creates a much more integrated feel. There’s a bit more of a sense of being one with the machine, as Forbes Wheels learned during a debut drive event at the Utah Motorsports Park outside Salt Lake City.

It added a bit of a challenge when Toyota decided to add the new manual gearbox, requiring not only a new transmission but a rejiggering of the center console—including the BMW iDrive-style controller—to make room for the shifter. It was a reasonable compromise, however. It places the stick precisely where it needs to be. And the gearbox itself is silky smooth, requiring little effort to flog it from gear to gear.

For those who’ve not mastered the art, the MT package comes with auto rev-matching on downshifts—though you can shut it off using Individual Mode on driver’s settings.

How much you’ll actually use the stick is a question mark. Supra’s turbo-six engine boasts a wide torque band and we wound up rarely shifting as we lapped around the Utah track.

Buyers should note that the manual is only available on six-cylinder Supras. If you prefer the less expensive four-banger, you’ll have to stick with the eight-speed automatic.

Changes Ahead

The transmission is one of several updates for 2023. If you’re looking for something a little more distinctive, consider the Supra 3.0 A91-MT Edition. It’s a bit different from last year’s A91 package, with its extensive use of carbon fiber. Limited to just 500 copies, this year’s package gets details like gunmetal gray wheels, cognac leather seating and red struts. New color options include “Burnout” and “CU Later Gray.”

Other changes to the Supra include a new Hairpin+ function that eases up on the sports car’s electronically controlled limited-slip differential when maneuvering around tight corners.

The Road to Manual

The latest-generation Supra has certainly been nothing if not controversial—and intentionally so. Toyota has long struggled to shed its image of bland styling and performance. So when CEO Akio Toyoda demanded his development team put more “passion” into their products, they took him seriously.

But to financially justify bringing the Supra back into the line-up, Toyota took the unusual step of partnering with BMW. The underlying platform also serves as the foundation for the far less edgy BMW Z4. For its part, the Japanese automaker borrowed heavily from its exterior design of the FT-1 concept from 2021. Inside, that’s another matter entirely. The instrumentation and infotainment technology are largely lifted whole from the German manufacturer’s parts bin.

Including the limited-run A91-MT model, the 2023 Toyota Supra is available in three different trims, with prices ranging from $52,500 to $58,345—before factoring in $1,095 in delivery fees.

UPDATE: Manual GR Supra in Australia from November

The updated 2023 Toyota GR Supra, including the long-awaited manual option, will be on sale in Australia from November 10.

Confirmation of a manual transmission for the new GR Supra came back in March, after months of speculation that the automatic offered at launch would not be the only transmission available.

Toyota then revealed the manual-equipped Supra in April and quickly confirmed its availability for the Australian market.

As detailed below, the manual will be offered in two grades: the entry-level Supra GT, priced from $87,000, and the flagship Supra GTS listed from $97,000 – both are plus on-roads.

Snapshot

  • 2023 Toyota GR Supra pricing and features
  • Six-speed manual transmission now available
  • Larger rear brakes now standard, GTS gains lighter 19-inch wheels

The updated 2023 Toyota GR Supra has been priced for Australia, ahead of its arrival before the end of the year.

Headlining the changes is the addition of a new six-speed manual transmission, which has been specifically developed to match the performance of the rear-drive, BMW Z4-based Supra’s 285kW/500Nm 3.0-litre straight six engine.

It will be available in two variants: the entry-level Supra GT, priced from $87,000, and the flagship Supra GTS listed from $97,000 – both are plus on-roads.

Manual examples miss out on adaptive cruise control and reverse autonomous emergency braking.

For both variants, this represents a price increase of $506 compared to the 2022 Toyota GR Supra, which scored an $809 reduction in July.

As such, prices have remained mostly steady following the launch of the previous update in December 2020.

Red brake calipers and larger rear ventilated brakes are now fitted across the Supra range, while the flagship GTS gains new-design 19-inch forged alloy wheels with revised spoke and cross-sectional shapes.

Finished in a premium titanium dark silver finish, the revised wheels have a weight reduction of 1.2 kilograms per wheel.

Toyota has also adjusted the Supra’s colour palette for 2023, with copper grey, azure blue and matte white replacing the existing, racetrack-themed Suzuka silver and Goodwood grey.

Since its launch in Australia in 2019, more than 700 examples have been delivered, with the two-door facing fresh competition from the newly-launched Nissan Z, which is available with a 298kW/475Nm 3.0-litre turbo V6 matched with a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic transmission.

Engine, drivetrain and fuel economy

Under the bonnet, the 2023 Toyota GR Supra retains its ‘B58’ 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine, shared with the BMW Z4.

It produces 285kW (at 5000-6500rpm) and 500Nm (at 1600-4500rpm), and is matched with a ZF-sourced eight-speed torque converter automatic, or new-for-2023 six-speed manual transmission.

Toyota claims the automatic GR Supra will complete the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.1 seconds, while the manual version is rated at 4.6 seconds. It has an electronically limited 250km/h top speed.

Fuel economy figures can be found in the table below:

3.0-litre turbo manual TBA
3.0-litre turbo automatic 7.7L/100km

The 2023 Toyota GR Supra starts at $43,540. The cost of entry for the 6-cylinder engine is $52,500, and going all the way up to the new A91-MT model costs $58,345. The pricing of the GR Supra is similar to the new Nissan Z, and it's more affordable than the Audi TT, BMW Z4, and Porsche 718 Cayman.

Is there a new Toyota Supra coming out?

The 2023 Toyota Supra comes in four trims: 2.0, 3.0, 3.0 Premium and A91-MT. The Supra 2.0 is only offered with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission.

Is the 2023 Supra coming in manual?

For many enthusiasts, something just didn't sit right about such a legendary nameplate at the top of the brand's Gazoo Racing–developed lineup being available only with an automatic. Fortunately, Toyota heeded the call to save the manuals, introducing a stick-shift Supra for 2023.

How fast is a 2023 Toyota Supra?

The Supra 2.0 continues to make 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from its 2.0-liter turbo-four engine. This engine comes paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission. In our testing, the Supra 2.0 sprinted to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds.
