Hi everyone,

For this month, I've updated this list with newer options [specifically from Microsoft]!

My best gaming laptops list was last month. This time, I have an updated version of my general list of good general use options. If you are looking for a gaming laptop list instead, please click here to view my list from September 2021!

As a reminder, this list isn't a definitive list to determine what you should get. It should give you an overall idea of what you should be able to expect in a given price range. If you have any questions about anything listed here, let me know, I will assist you!

Here is a general list for options that are good for general use.

General use applies to anyone who streams videos or movies, browses the Internet, does school work, does music production, etc. This list also has options that are good for light gaming.

If you're looking for a specific laptop recommendation, considering making a request in the pinned weekly request thread.

Here is a small guide for searching for a good general use laptop.

Look for a decent processor! For general use, you will likely want at least an i3 or Ryzen 3 processor for smooth performance. Big into multitasking? Then, for at least a quad core processor. It is important to note that Intel has continued to excel in single-core performance, while AMD has continued to excel in multi-core performance, and as a result, it is a bit difficult to compare options from both brands. As a result, I have organized the CPUs into general categories [generally in performance order, but as I mentioned earlier, the discrepancy makes comparison difficult]:

Low-End CPUs: MediaTek Helio P60T, Celeron N3350, Celeron N4000, Celeron N4020, 4th Gen i5

Mid-Range CPUs: Ryzen 5 3450U, i5-1135G7, Ryzen 5 4500U, Ryzen 5 5500U, Ryzen 5 4680U,

High-End CPUs: i7-1165G7, i7-1185G7, i7-11370H, Ryzen 7 4700U, Ryzen 7 5700U, Ryzen 7 5800U, Ryzen 9 5900HX, Apple M1

Look for SSDs in laptops! If you want a smooth performance, an SSD is highly recommended for faster boot times and faster load times. Any laptop with an extra M.2 slot can add this 120 GB ADATA SU650 M.2 2280 SSD. Any laptop with an extra 2.5" drive slot can add this 120 GB Inland Professional 2.5" SATA III SSD.

Looking for a good battery life or low weight? It is available! If you're looking for a good battery life, look for a laptop with a large capacity battery. Additionally, if the laptop has a high-power CPU [H], battery life will be lower. For general use, most people will be fine with a low-power CPU [Y, U] processors, which will improve battery life. It is important to note that laptops with Intel's new Tiger Lake CPUs [11th gen CPUs] are demonstrating excellent battery runtimes because Intel has made improvements when it comes to power efficiency. Another factor is a dedicated graphics card. Most users won't need one. If you don't need a dedicated graphics card, then it is a wise choice to avoid one for a better battery life. In the $500+ range, a low weight is easy to find.

In wake of the release of the subreddit's official website, laptopsdeals.net, this month's list is conveniently organized in a table there.

A lot of these laptops are not necessarily on sale, so keep your eyes peeled for the deals that are regularly posted on the subreddit! If you're looking for a specific laptop recommendation, considering making a request in the pinned weekly request thread.

If you are looking for a gaming device instead, take a look at my Best Gaming Laptop list from September 2021.

Hi there. I'm looking for a light laptop to replace my phone when it comes to taking notes and watching videos. The amount of reports I'm writing daily has increases dramatically lately and I wish to stop typing so much without a keyboard and move to a modest ~13" sized machine. It's use will mainly be office programs, a little bit of surfing and YouTube watching and perhaps the occasional game of some roguelike or another.

At least 7 hours of battery life is a requirement, 1080p panel would be nice, the rest is a bonus. If a bare-bone option exists, I have a m.2 sata drive and 4gb of ddr4 ram laying around.

Thanks in advance for any reference or suggestion.

Total budget [in local currency] and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Preferably near $500 or less. I can go higher, but want to stay low cost.

Are you open to refurbs/used?

New please

How would you prioritize form factor [ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.], build quality, performance, and battery life?

This is supplemental to a desktop workstation, and will be for portable light daily use. Mostly microsoft office and work based in a web browser. I don't want more than 256gb for the SSD.

I do need it as close to 100% SRGB color gamut as possible however. Even 90% will be okay, if there's no other options out there.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Portability and price over performance. U processors are on the table here.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14 or 15 inch display. 13 is way too small

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Needs to be able to install Adobe suite, so windows based. It doesn't have to run them well, this would be for touch ups only.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No games

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices [keyboard/touchpad]?

14 or 15 inch screen, and a good quality Trackpad. I'm spoiled by my current XPS Trackpad, and don't want to give that up. I can install windows precision drivers myself, if the machine allows it. Usb C charging would be dope, but a nice to have.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This complements a desktop rig where I'll be using Adobe suite and doing gaming. I need it for light browser work on the go, and need it to be able to install the lightroom and photoshop applications. Otherwise I would have gone with a chromebook.

My current laptop is very old, slow and has lots of problems. I feel it’s time I invest in a new one but have a limited budget and would like to spend as little as I could whilst still purchasing a good long lasting and lightweight laptop that is easy to carry around with me when travelling.

Any recommendations? Thank you and have a nice weekend!

Edit: this laptop is for work use so I’d prefer it to be fast and capable
