Mitsubishi Xpander 2023 review

When Mitsubishi Motors unveiled the refreshed Xpander globally in 2021, there was some visible confusion as to why its SUV-derivative, the Xpander Cross didn’t get the same slew of changes. While it did see a minor update, it didn’t get the aggressive new front fascia. Apparently, the Japanese carmaker just bided their time as two years later, they have finally unveiled the 2023 Xpander Cross.

Like the refreshed Xpander, the 2023 Xpander Cross features the newest iteration of the Dynamic Shield face which is now connected to a more aggressive front clip. The bumpers are now chunkier, while the re-shaped fender flares ride over the new 17-inch alloy wheels. All in all, the re-design looks to befit its SUV-like positioning. It also happens to get the same T-shaped head- and taillights lit by LEDs. The front fog lights are now lit by LEDs as well.

In terms of colors, Green Bronze Metallic joins Quartz White Pearl, Jet Black Mica, Blade Silver Metallic, and Graphite Gray Metallic.

Inside, the 2023 Xpander Cross builds on the 2022 update by getting an 8-inch digital gauge cluster and four-spoke steering wheel seemingly borrowed from the Montero Sport. It also gets a wireless device charger and a high-efficiency air filter. The rest of the cabin carries over from the new horizontal dashboard with soft-touch padded material, the black/blue color scheme, and leather seats covered with Heat Guard technology.

As for safety, the Xpander Cross gains Active Yaw Control [AYC] allowing it to selectively apply the inside wheels when cornering to reduce understeer. It also comes a 360-degree camera along with standard ABS with EBD and stability control.

Mechanically, the 2022 Xpander Cross is the same as the revamped Xpander. It uses the tried-and-tested 1.5-liter [4A91] with 105 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque mated to a CVT with a built-in shift logic.

For the suspension, the rigidity of the front strut mounting part is improved, and the cylinder size of the rear shock absorber is expanded, while high-performance valves are newly adopted at both the front and rear to provide a smooth and comfortable ride.

With the 2023 Xpander Cross built in Indonesia, they are the first market to get it first. It is very likely that it will make its way to the Philippines in the coming months. Who know, perhaps it could make a surprise appearance at the Philippine International Motor Show in September?
