Vấn đề 1 – Giới thiệu về cấp độ so sánh
Như bạn thấy, các tính từ cho phép chúng ta mô tả các sự việc: a late delivery; an early schedule. Nhưng chúng cũng cho phép chúng ta so sánh các phần mô tả này:
a later delivery an earlier schedule
the latest delivery the earliest schedule V
Các dạng chẳng hạn như late/later/latest và early/earlier/earliest minh họa cho ba dạng so sánh của tính từ. Late và early là dạng positive form – chúng mô tả một sự vật. Later và earlier là các dạng so sánh – chúng được dùng để so sánh hai sự vật. Latest và earliest là các dạng so sánh cấp nhất [superlative forms] – chúng diễn tả mức độ cao nhẩt của late và early. Late/early – The positive degree
Late và early là cẩp so sánh mang tính tích cực – chúng mô tả một sự vật:
They attended a late meeting. Late là positive; nó mô tả một cuộc họp.
He planned to get an early start. Early là positive; nó mô tả một cuộc khởi hành.
Later/earlier – The comparative degree
The late show start at 10 p.m.; the later show begins at midnight. Later được dùng trong phép so sánh hai buổi trình diễn: một buổi là trễ; còn buổi kia thì trễ hơn.
If only two crates are available, I prefer the earlier one. Earlier được dùng trong phép so sánh hai ngày.
Cách thành lập dạng của các cấp so sánh: Tất cả tính từ đều thành lập cấp so sánh bằng cách thêm er vào positive form:
long + er = longer fast + er = faster
clear + er = clearer young + er = younger
Dĩ nhiên, các tính từ tận cùng bằng e hoặc ỵ là dạng đặc biệt: late + er = later [bỏ e]
happy + er = happier [đổi y sang /■ rồi thêm er].
Tất cả tính từ có từ hai âm tiết trở lên thì phải sử dụng từ more thay vì er. more cheerful hoặc less cheerful [Chứ không dược dùng cheerfuler]; more eager hoặc less eager [Chi? không được: eagerer].
Latest/earliest – So sánh cấp nhất
Late, later và latest hoặc early, earlier và earliest cho phép chúng ra so sánh ba hoặc nhiều sự vật.
Jose came late [early] to the meeting. Brian arrived later [earlier]. Dee was the latest [earliest] to arrive.
Thành lập dạng so sánh cấp nhất [Forming the Superlative Degree] Hãy thêm est để thành lập dạng so sánh nhất của một tính từ:

long long + er = longer long + est = longest
clear clear + er = clearer clear + est = clearest
Bất cứ lúc nào bạn sử dụng more [hoặc less] để thành lập dạng so sánh, thì cũng phải sử dụng most [hoặc least] để thành lập dạng so sánh cấp nhất.

Chú ý! Một số tính từ không được so sánh theo ý nghĩa bình thường bởi vì chúng là tuyệt đối. Ví dụ, những từ sau đây alive, alone, complete, correct, dead, empty, final, finished, full, ideal, perfect, right, round, square, straight, và unique. Các tính từ tuyệt đối có thể diễn tả phép so sánh bằng cách sử dụng more nearly hoặc most nearly.
This glass is more nearly full than that one.
Your assignment was the most nearly correct of them all.

Good có lẽ là dạng tính từ tiêu biểu mà trong phép so sánh bạn không thể thêm er và est. Dưới đây là một số dạng khác:
