The Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) is the state agency that governs real estate practices in the state of Texas. The agency is headquartered at 1700 North Congress in Austin.[1]

TREC is composed of nine members appointed by the Governor with the concurrence of the Texas Senate. The members are appointed for six-year terms, with the terms of three members expiring every two years. Six members must be licensed real estate brokers who have been engaged in the real estate brokerage business as their major occupations for at least five years preceding their appointments. Three members must be members of the general public who are not regulated by the Commission or employed by organizations regulated by or receiving funds from the Commission.

Created in 1951, The Tennessee Real Estate Commission licenses, registers and regulates real estate brokers and affiliate brokers, real estate firms, rental location agents, time-share salespersons and developments, vacation clubs and vacation lodging services.

The Commission also enacts rules addressing professional conduct and standards of practice.

Non-Resident Licensee Continuing Education

In accordance with T.C.A. § 62-13-303(g) & (h), all licensees, including non-resident licensees, are required to submit sixteen (16) hours of real estate education as a requisite for re-issuance of their real estate license. 

T.C.A. § 62-13-303(g) states, 

Every two (2) years, as a requisite for the re-issuance of an affiliate brokers license originally issued on or after July 1, 1980, the affiliate broker shall furnish certification of satisfactory completion of sixteen (16) classroom hours in real estate courses at any school, college or university approved by the commission. 

T.C.A. § 62-13-303(h) states, in pertinent part, 

… Beginning with the license period immediately following the license period in which the licensee completes the one hundred twenty (120) hours of education specified in this subsection (h), the licensee of a broker's license originally issued after January 1, 2005, every two (2) years shall furnish certification of satisfactory completion of sixteen (16) classroom hours in real estate courses at any school, college or university approved by the commission as a requisite for the re-issuance of the license. 

On June 14, 2017, the Commission voted to grant a waiver of the continuing education requirements in T.C.A. § 62-13-303(g) & (h) above, for non-resident licensees whose license is due for renewal prior to September 1, 2017.   Starting September 1, 2017, if a non-resident licensee does not submit satisfactory completion of sixteen (16) hours in real estate courses approved by the Commission, the licensee’s real estate license will not be renewed.  If you have any questions, please contact TREC staff at [email protected].
