BMW X3 2023 redesign

New 2023 BMW X3 Redesign – The next-generation BMW X3 G01 facelift will launch next year, just in time for the 2022 or 2023 model years. The BMW X3 has been on the market since 2017 and continues to be one of the best-selling SUVs on the market. Today, the first test prototype of the LCI X3 was recently caught in the wild.

From what we can see, the visual changes will be rather light, especially since the G01 X3 is already a handsome car with large proportions and angles.

Most likely, we’ll get a slightly revised headlight with a new light signature and a larger, more muscular kidney grille to fit the X3 according to the design philosophy seen in the ranged BMW X models.

The front air intake will also be revised for a cleaner look. We also expect some minor changes to the backlights, although they are set to retain their T-letter shape.

Cabin changes are likely to get some updates as well, from new trims to new skin combinations. Compared to the pre-LCI generation, the new X3 LCI will get full integration of the BMW OS 7.0 infotainment architecture, becoming widely available from entry-level digital options for the high-end BMW Live Cockpit Professional.

Today, the BMW X3 offers a complete and comprehensive lineup that blends into the power of choice strategy: offering a complete powertrain option for a single model.

2023 BMW X3 Hybrid Engine

The X3 consists of a fuel-efficient gasoline unit, a 48-volt light hybrid diesel engine, a plug-in hybrid X3 xDrive30e, and now also the new iX3 electric SAV. Model M of the X3 family, namely X3 M40d, X3 M40i, X3 M, and X3 M Competition will also be updated with the advent of LCI generation.

We should also look at the prototype BMW X4 facelift soon, with the official premiere due around the same period as the X3 LCI.

2020 X3

[UPDATE: The story has been updated with photos of another prototype that appears to be the base-spec X3 due to the smaller-diameter wheels and the hidden exhaust pipe. We also get the first glimpse of the dashboard featuring a fully digital cockpit similar to the current BMW range]

BMW is already working on the next generation of the X3 as proven by a camouflaged prototype of the SUV caught by our spy photographers during transport for the very first time.

While the fourth generation of the X3 is presumably in the early stages of development, the prototype appears to be wearing its production body. The new model looks like a larger brother to the recently-revealed 2023 BMW X1, sporting similar shaped headlights and a familiar windowline.

BMW’s signature connected kidney grille doesn’t look much bigger compared to the current X3 which is a good thing – in fact, we suspect it might even be a bit smaller, at least on this early prototype. The profile remains recognisable but it incorporates the latest BMW design language with cleaner surfacing, pronounced front and rear fenders, and slightly boxy wheelarches similar to its predecessor. We can also see a new set of alloy wheels featuring a more complex iteration of the classic five-spoke design.

At the back, the taillights appear to be dummy units, hiding the LED signature of the model. However, we expected them to be smaller than in the current X3, mimicking the angular shape of the X1. Still, we can see the quad exhaust tailpipes with a round shape and the extended rear spoiler hinting at a performance-focused derivative. In this regard, our sources suggest that the pictured prototype is the M40i variant which is a step down from the full-blown X3 M.

We don’t have information about the specifications of the new X3 but we guess it will share its architecture with the 3-Series. The SUV is expected to be offered in ICE-powered, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric (iX3) variants, just like the current model, although with cleaner and more efficient powertrains. This is in line with BMW’s strategy for offering many different options for each model, although we suspect it will be the last X3 coming with an ICE under the bonnet before the Bavarian automaker goes fully electric.

The current third-generation of the BMW X3 was introduced in 2017 and received a facelift in 2021. This means that a new model could be revealed in 2024 the earliest, possibly as a 2025MY, marking a seven-year lifecycle that is typical of BMW products. A coupe-style BMW X4 will likely follow soon after the X3, alongside the performance-focused M-branded models that will certainly live on to the next generation with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Will the BMW X3 change in 2023?

Since BMW updated the BMW X3 crossover utility for the 2022 model year, changes for 2023 are not extensive. The only change to standard equipment is the addition of keyless entry. The revisions to optional packages concern supply-issue deletions rather than additions.

Is there a new BMW X3 coming out?

The current X3 was facelifted in June 2021 so we're not likely to see the next-generation car revealed until the end of 2023, with an on-sale date of 2024. This arrival is an awkward time for BMW as the X3 would just miss out on the introduction of the 'Neue Klasse' platform scheduled to launch in 2025.

Is the BMW X3 getting a redesign?

A redesigned BMW X3 should arrive in the U.S. in late 2024. BMW's fourth-generation X3 compact crossover will feature the brand's upsized signature kidney grille and slimmer LED lights, according to photos of a heavily camouflaged prototype spied in Germany.
