As Upfronts begin, it’s time to take a look at the current shows scheduled to return in the upcoming broadcast season as cable networks continue to take stock of their successes
For those keeping up, CBS previously announced several cancellations including the popular show “SWAT,” which will close after its seventh season. “True Lies” and “East New York” were also canceled after just one season
“9-1-1,” which was formerly at Fox, has changed homes and landed at ABC. However, “9-1-1. Lone Star” remains on the network along with “Accused,” “Animal Control,” and “Alert. Missing Persons Unit. ”
At NBC, “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago Med,” and “Chicago PD” were each renewed along with its latest revival success, “Night Court. ”
With the streaming bubble bursting and entertainment companies retooling their vision for the future of television, it seems like every new day yields a polarizing series cancellation. From viewership stats to marketing pitfalls and budgetary concerns, TV series are seeing the plug pulled at a seemingly faster rate than ever before — in some cases, after production has been completed and even before they’ve had a chance to air
For example, after outcry over recently canned series like “1899,” “First Kill” and “Warrior Nun,” Netflix’s new co-CEOS Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters said they have never canceled a “successful show. ” Platforms like AMC, Starz, Showtime and HBO Max have pulled shows despite having the majority of filming finished or nearly done so. And for Hulu, journalists and audiences raised disappointment following the cancellation of “Reboot. ”
At the same time, some shows across networks and streamers are coming to a close; conversely, fan-favorites like “Abbott Elementary” or long-running staples like Fox Animation Domination’s slate are being greenlit for additional installments

“48 Hours” [CBS] – Renewed

“60 Minutes” [CBS] – Renewed
The No. 1 news program for primetime, “60 Minutes” covers the wide breadth of the human experience through enterprise stories, investigative reports and sit-down interviews. It’ll be back for the 2023-2024 season
“61st Street” [The CW] – Renewed
Similar to “Invitation to a Bonfire,” the Courtney B. Vance series was pulled after one season, despite the fact that Season 2 episodes had already been shot. The drama, about a young Black man who got entangled in the Chicago criminal justice system, was part of the company’s strategic content write downs last year. The CW announced it’d be picking up the series on May 12, with plans to re-air Season 1 in fall 2023 and debut its second season in 2024
“9-1-1. Lone Star” [Fox] – Renewed
Also on May 1, Fox ordered another season of the Rob Lowe-led spinoff
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” [HBO] – Ending
HBO and creator/star Robin Thede announced in July that the variety sketch comedy series would not return for Season 5, opting to let its Season 4 finale mark the show’s end on a creative high. “Thank you to all the immensely talented cast members, guest stars, writers, directors, editors and crew members who have made ‘A Black Lady Sketch Show’ an Emmy-winning success,” Thede said in a statement
“Abbott Elementary” [ABC] – Renewed
At the 2023 Winter Television Critics Association, ABC announced that “Abbott Elementary” would be back for a third season. We can imagine Janine’s already dedicated a new binder to planning the upcoming term out

Hilary Swank will not be returning to ABC. After only one season, Tom McCarthy’s drama was axed along with “Big Sky” and “The Company You Keep. ” The short-lived series followed a New York journalist who moves to Alaska after burning some major bridges. In her new job, she dives into the missing and murdered Indigenous women crisis in the state of Alaska
“A League of Their Own” [Prime Video] – Canceled
The television version of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film was canceled by Prime Video after one season after being previously renewed for a shortened second season. Co-created by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson, the series was set to return for four episodes in its limited series second installment to say farewell to fans in the LGBTQ+ community and beyond before it was ultimately. But ultimately it wasn’t enough. The series was canceled after its third season
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” [HBO] – Ending
The Robin Thede-created sketch show will not return for a fifth season and will end with its Season 4 finale, which aired May 19
“Bling Empire” and “Bling Empire. New York” [Netflix] – Canceled
The reality series, which follows a wealthy Asian American community in Beverly Hills, and its New York spinoff will not be returning at Netflix, per Deadline
“Blue Bloods” [CBS] – Renewed
The Tom Selleck-led drama was renewed for the 2023-2024 season in late March, marking its fourteenth year on the network
“Bob Hearts Abishola” [CBS] – Renewed
The romantic comedy was renewed for fifth season in late January, joining other popular CBS programming like “Ghosts,” “Young Sheldon” and “The Neighborhood” in installments running through the 2024 TV season
“Bob’s Burgers” [Fox] – Renewed
Bob’s Burgers was renewed for Seasons 14 and 15 in late January
“Bob’s Burgers” currently ranks among the Top 10 comedies for the 2022-23 season, marking the show’s second consecutive season on the list
“Bosch. Legacy” [Freevee] – Renewed
The “Bosch” spinoff stars Titus Welliver as the retired cop and Madison Lintz as his daughter, Maddie, who followed her father onto the force. It was renewed for Season 3 on May 1
“Breeders” [FX] – Ending
The Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard-led comedy about parenting is coming to an end after four seasons. The final, 10-episode season will premiere with its first two episodes on July 31 on FX, with every subsequent episode available each week. All episodes will be available to stream next day on Hulu. In addition to Freeman and Haggard, the season’s cast will include Alun Armstrong, Joanna Bacon, Oscar Kennedy, Zoë Athena and Jessie Williams
“Bupkis” [Peacock] – Renewed
Pete Davidson’s semi-autobiographical comedy will be returning for a second season at the NBCUniversal-owned streamer
“Call Me Kat” [Fox] – Canceled
The Mayim Bialik-led series was canceled at Fox just one day after its Season 3 finale in May. The ensemble cast was rounded out by the late actor Leslie Jordan, Swoosie Kurtz, Kyla Pratt, Julian Gant, Cheyenne Jackson and Christopher Rivas
“Chicago Fire,” “Chicago Med” and “Chicago PD” [NBC] – Renewed
All three of Dick Wolf’s “One Chicago” series were renewed through 2024 in April. “Chicago Fire” [Season 12], “Chicago Med” [Season 9] and “Chicago PD” [Season 11]
“Chucky” [Syfy] – Renewed
Fret not, the title creepy doll [and M3gan’s nemesis] isn’t going anywhere. Along with “Reginald the Vampire” [see below], the horror show was renewed for Season 3 in mid-January
“Citadel” [Prime Video] – Renewed
The Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas-led spy thriller “Citadel” has been greenlit for a second season at Prime Video. The series, which is the streamer’s second most-watched new original series outside the U. S. and fourth most-watched worldwide, will see Joe Russo direct all episodes of the next installment
“City on Fire” [Apple TV+] – Canceled
The crime drama from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage won’t be returning for a second season on the streamer
“The Cleaning Lady” [Fox] – Renewed
The thriller-crime series starring Élodie Yung was renewed for a third installment in early February, with “Good Girls” executive producer Jeannine Renshaw joining creator-EP Miranda Kwok as co-showrunner. She takes over from Melissa Carter
“Cobra Kai” [Netflix] – Ending
For five seasons, “Cobra Kai” has extended the universe of one of Hollywood’s most iconic fictional professional fighting tales, serving as a sequel to the original “The Karate Kid. ” It’ll end with a sixth season
“The Company You Keep” [ABC] – Canceled
Julia Cohen’s sexy spy thriller is not moving forward, along with “Big Sky” and “Alaska Daily. ” The series followed a con man who finds himself in a complicated romantic relationship with an undercover member of the CIA. Starring Milo Ventimiglia and Catherine Haena Kim, the ambitious series never seemed to find its audience
“The Conners” [ABC] – Renewed
The “Roseanne” sequel series will return for Season 6 at ABC, the network announced in May
“Criminal Minds. Evolution” [Paramount+] – Renewed
The reboot of the long-running CBS procedural garnered a Season 2 order mid-January. The Joe Mantegna-led show became one of Paramount+’s top five original series and has driven the overall franchise to see an increase of nearly six times in month-over-month viewership. It reunites most of the original show’s cast members
“CSI. Vegas” [CBS] – Renewed
The spinoff series starring Paula Newsome will return with a third season in the 2023-2024 TV season
“Dark Winds” [AMC] – Renewed
The action series starring Zahn McClarnon was renewed for a third season by AMC, the network announced in mid-September
“Die Hart” [Roku] – Renewed
Kevin Hart’s comedy series “Die Hart” has been renewed for a third season at Roku following a record-breaking premiere for its second season. Casting and additional details for season 3 will be shared at a later date
“The Diplomat” [Netflix] – Renewed
The Keri Russell-led political thriller was renewed for a second installment at Netflix

“East New York” [CBS] – Canceled
The series, which followed officers and detectives of the NYPD’s 74th precinct in Brooklyn, was canceled after one season at CBS
“Fake Profile” [Netflix] – Renewed
The Colombian drama will be returning for Season 2 on Netflix, the streamer announced in June
“Family Guy” [Fox] – Renewed
In addition to “Bob’s Burgers,” Fox renewed “Family Guy” for Seasons 22 and 23
The Emmy-winning animated comedy currently ranks among the Top 10 comedies for the 2022-23 Season, marking the fifth consecutive seasons on the list. Per the network, “Family Guy” also ranks as Fox’s most-streamed program on record and continues the trend this season, averaging 5. 1 million viewers
“The Family Stallone” [Paramount+] – Renewed
The Sylvester Stallone-centric reality was renewed for a second season after the series secured its spot as the most watched original reality show premiere on the streaming service
“Fantasy Island” [Fox] – Canceled
This sequel to the 1970s series, which starred Roselyn Sánchez as Elena Roarke, was canceled on May 9 after two seasons
“FBOY Island” [The CW] – Renewed
The reality TV dating series hosted by Nikki Glaser has been picked up for a third season by The CW after being canceled on HBO Max, with the third installment of the series set to air on the network this fall
“Firebuds” [Disney] – Renewed
The series was return for for a third water rescue themed season, Disney announced in June
“Fire Country” [CBS] – Renewed
CBS’ fire-fighting procedural starring Max Thieriot as a young convict seeking redemption was renewed in early January for Season 2. Since its premiere, the drama has averaged 8 million viewers per episode, making it the top new broadcast series of the season.
“The Flash” [The CW] – Ending
“The Flash” will end with Season 9, which is set to premiere on Feb. 8 at 8 p. m. ET/PT on The CW. Starring Grant Gustin as the title speedster, the show has spanned nearly a decade and more than 180 episodes. Based on the characters from DC, “The Flash” is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television
“Freeridge” [Netflix] – Canceled
The “On My Block” spinoff, which starred Keyla Monterroso Mejia and Bryana Salaz, as, respectively, rival sisters Gloria and Ines, and featured an entirely POC cast, was canceled on April 12 after one season
“From” [MGM+] – Renewed
The sci-fi series, which centers on a monstrous town that traps its visitors, was renewed for a 10-episode third season, just days after “From” aired its season 2 finale
“Ghosts” [CBS] – Renewed
No scares here. A Season 3 renewal of the beloved comedy is in the bag. From creators Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, “Ghosts” ranks as the No. 1 comedy series on Paramount+ and CBS’ most-streamed program
“Ginny & Georgia” [Netflix] – Renewed
Netflix renewed the mother-daughter drama for an additional two seasons in May, taking the series up to its fourth season. Former “Degrassi” producer Sarah Glinski will serve as showrunner for Seasons 3 and 4 after Debra J. Fisher led Seasons 1 and 2
“The Goldbergs” [ABC] – Ending
After 10 seasons and more than 200 episodes, the Sony Pictures Television-backed comedy will be coming to a close. Created by Adam F. Goldberg, who based the half-hour show on his childhood experiences, the series finale is set for May 3
“The Good Doctor” [ABC]
The series, which stars Freddie Highmore, was renewed for Season 7 in April
“Gossip Girl” [HBO Max] – Canceled
The reboot series, which follows a new generation of New York private school teens who are taunted by a mysterious social media presence spilling their secrets, was canceled after two seasons, ahead of “Gossip Girl’s” extravagant Met Gala Season 2 finale. Though showrunner Josh Safran said he hoped to find a new home for the series at the time of cancelation, he admitted it would be an “uphill battle. ”
“Gotham Knights” [The CW] – Canceled
The DC series was canceled after one season at The CW, the network announced ahead of the Season 1 finale of “Gotham Knights” that is slated to air on June 27
“Grand Crew” [NBC] – Canceled
The hangout comedy series from Phil Augusta Jackson and Dan Goor [“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”] has been canceled after two seasons. “Grand Crew,” which is produced by Universal Television and executived produced by Jackson and Goor, stars Echo Kellum, Nicole Byer, Aaron Jennings, Justin Cunningham, Carl Tart and Grasie Mercedes
“The Great” [Hulu] – Canceled
The period drama starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult was canceled by the streamer after three seasons
“Grey’s Anatomy” [ABC] – Renewed
The beloved series made its return for Season 20 official on March 24, extending the show’s record as the longest-running medical drama in television history. Longtime writer and executive producer Meg Marinis is set to take over as showrunner as Krista Vernoff’s exit at the end of Season 19
“Hit Monkey” [Hulu] – Renewed
“Hit-Monkey” is coming back with a vengeance at Hulu after being renewed for a second season in February
Based on the Marvel comics character, the show’s first season follows a Japanese snow monkey joins forces with the ghost of an American assassin to avenge the slaughter of his tribe by killing their way through the Yakuza underworld. The second season will follow the pair to New York City
“High Desert” [Apple TV+] – Canceled
The dark comedy was canceled after one season, according to star Patricia Arquette via an instagram post
“A lot of you have asked about ‘High Desert’ and if there was going to be a second season, so I just wanted to let you know that we just found out that we won’t be coming back,” Arquette said. “That’s a sad bummer for all of us. ”
“High School Musical. The Musical. The Series” [Disney+] – Ending
The Disney+ TV adaptation will end with its fourth season, which premieres in August
“How I Met Your Father” [Hulu] – Canceled
The “How I Met Your Mother” spinoff series starring Hillary Duff was canceled at Hulu after two seasons
“Hunters” [Prime Video] – Ending
The alternative history series concluded its two-season run this January. From David Weil, the drama — which followed a group of vigilante Nazi hunters in the 1970s — starred Al Pacino, Logan Lerman, Jennifer Jason Leigh and more

“King of Collectibles. The Goldin Touch” [Netflix] – Renewed
The streamer renewed the series following a leading auction house specializing in rare collectibles for a second season in July
“Krapopolis” [Fox] – Renewed
The upcoming animated comedy was renewed for a third season well before its series premiere, which will make its debut during the 2023-24 Season. Set mythical ancient Greece, “Krapopolis” follows the dysfunctional interactions between humans, gods and monsters as the society makes its mark on the world’s first cities. Season 2 eventually finished filming and Lionsgate successfully sold the show to Starz
“The Mosquito Coast” [Apple TV+] – Canceled
The action series starring Justin Theroux, Melissa George, Logan Polish and Gabriel Bateman was canceled after two seasons on Apple TV+. Based on Paul Theroux’s bestselling 1981 novel, “The Mosquito Coast” centers on an idealist inventor who puts his family in jeopardy in order to escape the U. S. government, cartels and bounty hunters.

“Vampire Academy” [Peacock] – Canceled
The vampire-centric series was canceled in late January at Peacock after one season
Created by vampire aficionado Julie Plec of “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals” and “Legacies,” the series gave new life to the YA Books by author by Richelle Mead, which was previously adapted in a 2014 film starring Zoey Deutch
“Virgin River” [Netflix] – Renewed
The Alexandra Breckenridge-led drama secured an early Season 6 renewal at the streamer in May ahead of its fifth season launching Fall 2023
“Walker” [The CW] – Renewed
The reimagining of “Walker, Texas Ranger” will return for a 13-episode fourth season that will premiere during the 2023-2024 broadcast season. The series, whose prequel “Walker. Independence” was canceled after one season, stars “Supernatural’s” Jared Padalecki alongside Keegan Allen, Violet Brinson, Molly Hagan, Kale Culley, Coby Bell, Jeff Pierre, Mitch Pileggi and Odette Annable

“We’re Here” [HBO] – Renewed
The GLAAD award-winning unscripted series was renewed for a fourth season in July
“Willow” [Disney+] – Canceled
Disney+ canceled “Willow,” the sequel series to the fantasy film, after one season
“The Winchesters” [The CW] – Canceled
It was easy come, easy go for The CW’s “Supernatural” spinoff. Set in the 1970s, the drama documented how Sam and Dean’s parents — John Winchester and Mary Campbell — met and fell in love.
“As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions. We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of ‘Kung Fu’ and ‘The Winchesters’ for all their hard work, creativity and dedication,” The CW said in a statement
“Winning Time” [HBO] – Canceled
The series inspired by the Los Angeles Lakers will not return for a third season at HBO. Prior to the cancellation, which meant the Season 2 finale would serve as a series finale, Jeff Pearlman, who wrote “Showtime. Magic, Kareem, Riley and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s,” expressed his concern that a Season 3 would not happen
“I’m telling you — the future of ‘Winning Time’ hangs in the balance,” he tweeted. “We need viewers. The strikes are crippling. Please help spread the word. Season 2 is amazing. But … HBO is big on #s. ”
“The Wonder Years” [ABC] – Canceled
The sitcom reimagining the ’80s series of the same name was canceled after two seasons at ABC
“XO Kitty” [Netflix] – Renewed
The “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” spinoff series was renewed for a second season in June
“Yellowjackets” [Showtime] – Renewed
The drama, which stars Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci and Tawny Cypress, scored an early Season 3 renewal at Showtime ahead of the launch of its second installment
“Yellowstone” [Paramount] – Ending
TV’s most-watched show is coming to a close with “Yellowstone’s” fifth and final season, which begins airing in November. The ending does not mean the “Yellowstone” universe is slowly down, however, as it will be succeeded by a new sequel series, that is in talks to be led by Matthew McConaughey
“You” [Netflix] – Renewed
Joe’s killer journey will continue for a fifth and final season in 2024, Netflix announced in late March. Sera Gamble will step down as showrunner and continue to executive produce while executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo will step in as co-showrunners
“Young Rock” [NBC] – Canceled
Dwayne Johnson’s “Young Rock,” which follows the actor’s journey to the top and the colorful characters that keep him grounded, has been canceled after three seasons. In addition to Johnson, the series stars Joseph Lee Anderson, Stacey Leilua, Ana Tuisila, Adrian Groulx, Bradley Constant, Uli Latukefu, Fasitua Amosa, John Tui and Matthew Willig star
The show is created by Nahnatchka Khan and Jeff Chiang, with the pair serving as executive producers along Johnson, Dany Garcia, Jennifer Carreras, Hiram Garcia and Brian Gewirtz. Universal Television, Seven Bucks Productions and Fierce Baby Productions serve as producers
