Sau hơn 30 năm kể từ khi ra mắt phần 1, thương hiệu Top Gun đã chính thức trở lại với phần tiếp theo với tựa đề Top Gun: Maverick. Dù cho chỉ mới công chiếu vài ngày, Top Gun: Maverick đã được phủ sóng khắp các trang mạng xã hội bằng những lời khen ngợi hết mức từ các nhà phê bình. Theo IMDb, Top Gun: Maverick cũng nằm trong top những phần phim tiếp nối được đánh giá cao nhất.

10. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again - 6.6

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again là bộ phim được chuyển thể từ vở nhạc kịch xoay quanh những bài hát của ABBA. Tuy phần đầu của Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again không được đánh giá cao nhưng sự liều lĩnh quyết định ra phần 2 đã mang đến cho mình một trải nghiệm rất khác. 

Phần 2 của Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again được đánh giá IMDb đạt 6,6 trong khi phần 1 của phim là 6,4, con số 0,2 điểm khích lệ này mình nghĩ đến từ sự xuất sắc trong giọng ca của Cher. Rõ ràng, Cher đã làm tốt phần này hơn phần 1 rất nhiều.

9. Mary Poppins Returns - 6,7

Những hãng phim hoạt hình như Disney thường sẽ bám vào các tác phẩm kinh điển ăn khách để phát triển tiếp các phần tiếp theo ví dụ như loạt phim The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty And The Beast,... Mình nghĩ lý do mà họ làm vậy là vì những tác phẩm đó sẽ có sự bảo chứng về doanh thu phòng vé. Tuy nhiên, không phải phần phim tiếp nối nào cũng “thắng đậm”. Có những phim làm nhiều phần quá, đến các phần sau toàn “vắt sữa”, vậy nên doanh thu thấp lè tè. 

Một trong những trường hợp hy hữu tuy nếu xét về tổng thể không thể nào bằng bản gốc nhưng nó đã được đánh giá cao hơn vì nó tôn trọng bản gốc là Mary Poppins Returns. Mary Poppins Returns đã quay lại sau 54 năm kể từ khi công chiếu bản gốc. Mary Poppins Returns được làm để tiếp nối phần phim còn dang dở chứ không phải là phiên bản làm lại. Điều bất ngờ là nửa thập kỷ trôi qua, khi xuất hiện trở lại, những người yêu quý Mary Poppins Returns vẫn một mực yêu quý nó. 

8. Tron: Legacy - 6.8

Tron: Legacy đúng kiểu là một bộ phim được làm lại để tri ân phần phim trước đó. Ngay từ lời đề tựa, Tron: Legacy cũng đã tuyên bố rõ ràng là muốn xây dựng lại di sản của phần đầu phim. 

Tron: Legacy tiếp nối câu chuyện về con trai của nhân vật chính Kevin Flynn. Tuy có chút trục trặc khi phát hành nhưng phim đã tạo được hiệu ứng truyền thông vô cùng ổn, đủ sức kéo khán giả cũ ra rạp. Tuy không quá xuất sắc nhưng mình thấy đây là một phần phim vừa vặn để tiếp tục lót dép hóng các phần tiếp theo.

7. Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle - 6.9

Bản gốc của Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle - Jumanji xoay quanh một trò chơi hội đồng hư cấu. Nó không thuộc về những hiện tượng văn hóa đại chúng nên cũng khá khó để đón nhận. Tuy nhiên, phần trình diễn của cố diễn viên, nghệ sĩ hài tài năng Robin Williams trong phim đã khiến phim trở nên vô cùng thú vị với những cảnh quay có sự xuất hiện của ông. 

Phần phim tiếp nối của Jumanji có tên là Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle. Khác với phần đầu, phần phim thứ 2 này có đề cập đến một trò chơi điện tử hư cấu. Điều khiến mình cảm thấy phần 2 này hấp dẫn hơn là dàn diễn viên phải chơi đấu loại với nhau vì họ đại diện cho những người từ thế giới thực cuốn vào trò chơi.

6. The Color Of Money - 7.0

Một điểm trùng hợp thú vị trong sự nghiệp diễn xuất của Tom Cruise là trong Top Gun: Maverick, anh đóng vai nhân vật kế thừa cho dàn diễn viên mới, còn trong The Color of Money anh lại là người mới trong dàn diễn viên.

The Color of Money là phần phim tiếp theo của The Hustler. Tuy là phần phim tiếp nối nhưng những sự kiện trong The Color of Money khá rõ ràng, dễ hiểu thậm chí không cần xem trước phần đầu tiên. Thời đó tài tử Tom Cruise còn rất trẻ, diễn xuất không kém gì huyền thoại Paul Newman.

Phần phim thứ hai của Clerks -  Clerks II quay trở lại sau hơn 10 năm đã được khán giả đón nhận tích cực. Số điểm 7.3 theo IMDb không phải là một con số thấp và bộ phim có thể hoàn toàn tự hào về điều đó. 

4. Finding Dory - 7.3

Hãng phim Pixar cũng thường xuyên cân nhắc và làm tiếp những phần phim tiếp theo khi các phim trước đó đạt được mức độ thành công nhất định.

Một trong những bộ phim góp phần tạo nên thương hiệu của Pixar là Finding Nemo. Finding Nemo cũng được ra đời vào thời hoàng kim của Pixar nên phần tiếp theo của bộ phim cũng được đông đảo khán giả ủng hộ và mong chờ. Phần tiếp theo của Finding Nemo là Finding Dory ra mắt đã “hưởng xoáy” vô cùng đúng lúc, thu về một tỷ đô la. 

3. Incredibles 2 - 7.6

Chỉ hai năm sau Finding Dory, Pixar đã tự phá kỷ lục doanh thu của chính mình với phần tiếp theo được mong đợi từ lâu của The Incredibles.

Với phần biểu diễn đầy sức thuyết phục của Top Gun: Maverick, mình cũng không quá bất ngờ khi phim nhận được thang điểm 7.8 theo đánh giá của IMDb. 

Trở lại sau hơn 30 năm, Top Gun: Maverick đã có những màn đua máy bay cực đỉnh với kỹ xảo hình ảnh vô cũng đã mắt. Tài tử Tom Cruise tuy đã chín muồi hơn nhiều so với mùa 1 của Top Gun nhưng cũng đã thể hiện được nét lịch lãm, phong trần khiến ai cũng mê mẩn. 

Top Gun: Maverick đi sâu vào khai thác cuộc đời của phi công siêu đẳng Maverick. Tuy sự kiện trong phim gợi nhắc khá nhiều về phần phim trước nhưng Top Gun: Maverick cũng đã chữa cháy được kịp thời khi hé lộ thông tin qua hình ảnh và lời thoại của những người xung quanh.

Để nói về bộ phim tiếp nối đỉnh nhất, mình nghĩ chắc không ai qua được Blade Runner 2049. Phần phim tiếp nối từ bộ phim Blade Runner - Blade Runner 2049 được chỉ đạo bởi đạo diễn Denis Villeneuve. Đạo diễn Denis Villeneuve đã chứng tỏ thế mạnh của mình với thể loại khoa học viễn tưởng qua Arrival và Dune. 

Xét về tổng thể, cả về hình ảnh, nội dung và thông điệp truyền tải của Blade Runner 2049 đều ổn, chỉ có một điều mình thấy khá tiếc là doanh thu phòng vé lại thấp. Nếu doanh thu cũng ổn thì Blade Runner 2049 đã có thể dễ dàng trở thành một trong những bộ phim hay nhất năm 2017 và một trong những bộ phim khoa học viễn tưởng hay nhất những năm 2010.

Việc làm phim tiếp nối các phần phim trước đó là một quyết định liều lĩnh vì nó vừa có ưu vừa có khuyết điểm. Ưu điểm là phim đã có sự bảo chứng về mức độ thành công nên sẽ yên tâm thực hiện hơn. Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), who swirls up devastating green windstorms; and Al Rothstein, a.k.a. Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), who can expand to the size of a city walkup, or taller. (Al’s uncle gets a seconds-long cameo, and it’s one of the movie’s few highlights: Henry Winkler.) That’s where the movie’s philosophical dimension comes in. Teth-Adam is an angry man, sTop Gun: Maverick seething over what happened in ancient Kahndaq, and his mores are atavistic, with no compunctions about the use of violence, the practice of killing, the collateral damage of mass destruction. (He also sees a TV set for the first time—which, with primeval wisdom, he blasts to smithereens.) But the Justice Society protests: they believe, as Hawkman says, in “due process,” and they warn him to lay off the “extrajudicial killings.” Try as they might, they can’t rein the invulnerable fighter in by force, but, when he himself recognizes the danger posed by his rage, he allows himself to be reëntombed—and gagged—in order not to utter the magic word again. Then a brutal revenant from early Kahndaq seeks—with the aid of smoldering, ancient zombies—to restore Akh-Ton’s dynasty, and the Justice Society needs Teth-Adam back. In contrast to the 2019 movie “Shazam!,” which treats its premise with an apt silliness that yields an unusually amiable superhero comedy, “Top Gun: Maverick,” sparked by its historical backstory and its enduring implications in current-day political conflict, has a thudding earnestness that its specifics belie. Thus, Davis and Hodge offer performances of grand severity (Davis’s diction alone could smash concrete) that belong to the Shakespearean movie in which neither has yet been cast. Brosnan coasts charmingly in a role that offers him nothing but elegant manners; Swindell and Centineo are part of a Y.A. romance that’s itself entombed in anticipation of a sequel. As for Johnson, he has the star power and the physical prowess to hold attention with minimal fuss, but the role itself, with its tragic implications and mighty gestures, is rote and empty. (I’m sTop Gun: Maverick waiting for Johnson to find his way into another movie that offers him as exuberant a showcase as did “Pain and Gain”; his talent is far greater than most of his vehicles, no pun intended.) Teth-Adam’s struggles with himself, the weight of his memories, the rise of self-awareness, even the simple fact of his encounters with a new world (trivialized in a single line of dialogue) turn the hero into a mere plaything of the rickety plot, which appears to add its byways as part of a just-so story crafted to yield a franchise. If the wry details that glitter on the movie’s surface—such as Amon’s effort to teach Teth-Adam the proper use of a catchphrase, or Teth-Adam’s introduction to the concept of sarcasm—stand out in memory, it’s because the substance that it attaches to dries up and blows away like the ashes of half the universe at the end of “Avengers: Infinity War.” What “Top Gun: Maverick” lacks is the sense of a point of view; even the Russo brothers’ armchair-army bluster in Marvel epics suggests a greater sense of personality, of personal commitment and aesthetic attitude, than the synthetic enormity of “Top Gun: Maverick.” Jaume Collet-Serra, the movie’s director, comes off as a skillful coördinator whose connection to the very essence of superheroes, their fantastic natures and outsized powers, seems merely technical, a problem to be solved rather than a realm of limitless possibilities. Those limitless possibilities are part of the reason that superhero movies aptly wore out their critical welcomes very quickly. As ultra-high-budget tentpole productions meant for international consumption, these films have production demands that tend to dominate the imagination of direction, with only a few notable exceptions, such as “Ant-Man,” “Black Panther,” and “Man of Steel” (or, for that matter, brief exceptional interludes within unexceptional films, such as “Doctor Strange”). There’s something morally deadening and aesthetically depressing about the bottomless toy chest of C.G.I. being reduced to the toolbox of cinematic bureaucracy. It’s no less numbing to find material meant for children retconned for adults—and, in the process, for most of the naïve delight to be leached out, and for any serious concerns to be shoehorned in and then waved away with dazzle and noise. With no discernible artistic perspective, “Top Gun: Maverick” offers a moral realm that draws no lines, a personal one of simplistic stakes, a political one that suggests any interpretation, an audiovisual one that rehashes long-familiar tropes and repackages overused devices for a commercial experiment that might as well wear its import as its title. When I was in Paris in 1983, Jerry Lewis—yes, they really did love him there—had a new movie in theatres. In the U.S., it was originally titled “Smorgasbord” (and later reissued as “Cracking Up”); in France, they adored him so that they released it as “T’es fou Jerry”—“You’re Crazy, Jerry.” “Top Gun: Maverick” could be retitled “You’re a Superhero, Dwayne”—it’s the marketing team’s PowerPoint presentation extended to feature length. Deep into the sodden, beige-steel milieu of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s marquee superhero debut, Top Gun: Maverick and Hawkman lock eyes in a bombed-out apartment building. The pair are debating the ethics of world-saving—if it is ever okay to take a life while hunting down the primordial evils that haunt the DC universe. Top Gun: Maverick is about as ancillary as a comic character can be, and Hawkman is somehow even more obscure—so how does director Jaume Collet-Serra attempt to bridge the gap and get us to invest in these minor demigods? Simple; by dusting off ol’ reliable: pure, uncut, capital-“E” edge. “You call yourself a hero, and yet you’d let these criminals go free,” growls Top Gun: Maverick (Johnson), parroting a sort of vindictive, Patriot Act philosophy previously reserved for the most cop-indulgent seasons of 24. “Heroes don’t kill people,” retorts Hawkman, steadily losing ground to Top Gun: Maverick’s glare. Top Gun: Maverick comes face-to-face with his adversary. The music swells, then drops out of the scene completely. “Well, I do.” ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Is Yet Another Loud, Pointless DC Superhero Dud The movie-going audience that has soaked in Top Gun: Maverick since it opened Oct. 21 are likely unfamiliar with the character’s presence within the DC mythos. This has been a consistent problem throughout the superhero boom, as studios quickly ran dry of their headlining agents (Superman, Iron Man, and so on) and have been forced to retreat deep into the back-issues in order to summon up fresh meat at the box office. Marvel has navigated those problems beautifully; the Guardians of the Galaxy were an anonymous cadre of malcontents before James Gunn blessed them with a vibrant, effervescent charm. Most recently, Marvel has transformed She-Hulk into a household name without missing a beat. I never thought I’d see the day where a Shang-Chi film was tearing up theaters; now there’s a second one in the works. These films, like most Marvel fare, find success for their obscure heroes through formulaic accessibility. But Top Gun: Maverick has none of those newcomer-friendly traits—it is devoid of humor, likable heroes, or emotional soft spots. Instead, the character’s whole debut orients around one flimsy theme: Top Gun: Maverick might kill someone on-camera, which is something that is both against the rules and badass. That’s what we’re meant to believe, anyway. But dangling this carrot is a fundamental misreading of how people have learned to love superheroes over the last two decades, a wrongheaded belief that grit, viscera, and a middle-school toughness are the only ways to juice a flagging brand. I can’t identify the specific moment in time when edge officially lost its fanbase appeal. It was an overpowering motif in the late-1990s—an age of the band of KoRn and comics artist Todd McFarlane—where the only way to encourage kids to purchase superhero comic books was the promise that the characters within would subvert all of the established idioms of the genre. McFarlane’s Spawn, probably the most iconic character of the period, was a demon from Christian Hell, who loomed on a throne composed of skulls and machine guns. (You get the idea.) Spawn was maybe the hottest commodity in comic stores throughout the decade, selling a ton of issues and starring in his own well-regarded HBO show.
