Mercedes-Benz in collaboration with AMG has built some of the world's most ludicrous performance vehicles over the past few decades. Characterized by two types of engine, the V8 and V12. With various power units seeing use including a 5.5 V8, the iconic 6.3 V8, and the smooth 6.5 V12. However roughly a decade ago as all gearheads know the great downsizing began. The most radical move of the Mercedes-Benz brand came with the A45 AMG, powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, this was the smallest engine under the AMG brand. In the European market, this saw great success in creating the term, hyper-hatch. Less obvious but still noticeable came the C63 AMG's new model for 2015. Out went the raucous 6.3 liter V8 and in came a modest 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. Now with the V8's demise closer than ever, our craving for the C63 AMG wagon is also at an all-time high! When a much-loved model exits production the moment of transition is both exciting yet for many a little sad. The W205 generation of C Class comes as no exception to this. Perhaps not as iconic as the previous W204, largely due to the lack of a Black Series model. Yet the W205 C63 sat in the middle of the Mercedes-AMG range during their Formula One domination. The perfect-sized competitor to the M3, it used a larger engine than the BMW both in displacement and cylinders. This net the model a reputation like the best AMGs. With an exhaust that popped and banged on the overrun, as well as having a deep throaty note. With an aggressive snarl to it, this could take over your heart. This car took its place as a true AMG. Impressive exhaust notes aside from the outgoing AMG balance digital and analog. According to Mercedes-Benz AMG, the C63 offers "sportiness combined with emotion and intelligence". As analog as an old E92 M3, powered by that amazingly high revving V8, no. But more so than new cars, yes. With launch control, sports exhausts, and controllable traction control, the outgoing C63 provides gearheads with all the tools they need to have fun. But without the latest technological interruptions. A balance of old school and the new, that the 2023 car won't match. The 2023 Mercedes-Benz C63 S AMG E Performance Loses Its Character Nothing is inherently wrong with a hybrid powertrain. After all, some of the world's greatest performance vehicles use hybrid powertrains. Many doubted the potential of four-cylinder engines in an AMG, especially as the competing RS3 uses a five-cylinder and the BMW M140i an in-line six. However, the A45 AMG is now in its second generation with the truly bonkers and truly successful A45 S AMG. Likely the 2023 C63 will in its life see such success. The 2.0-liter engine's power does not exist on its own, supplemented by an electric battery the total system yields 660 horsepower and 550 lb/ft of torque. This results in an improved 0-60 time of 3.4 seconds. The outgoing car managed this sprint in 4.0 seconds. So this is still undeniably what makes up a C63, fast, good-looking, and luxurious, it misses that soul. The C63 without a V8 does not seem right and is all the more reason to buy the current car while you still can. The last generation of cars progressed to a more curvaceous design, bucking the trend of the industry which added more aggressive stances and sharp body creases. Small revisions see the car fall in line with the brand's updated design language. These updates continue in the interior, with an upgraded infotainment system. The central display now reaches down the entire center console and points slightly toward the driver. Just like before the C63 comes as a coupe, sedan, wagon, or convertible with and 9-speed transmission. So what the C63 loses in character it makes up for in technology and comfort. But performance super sedans are for the heart, not the head. If you can, get the V8, there's only so much time left to make the stupid decision. Those won't necessarily all be small engines as Mercedes is determined to keep the V8 alive until 2030 and even beyond. In an interview with Australian magazine CarSales, the automaker's VP for vehicle development, Joerg Bartels, said the eight-cylinder mill is here to stay.
