Mazda cx-90 2023 release date

Price: We expect the 2023 Mazda CX-90 to start at about $35,000.

The 2023 Mazda CX-90 represents a seismic change in the Japanese automaker’s lineup of nimble, efficient, and family-friendly SUVs. Replacing the outgoing CX-9, the CX-90 comes with 3-rows of seating, standard all-wheel drive (AWD), and a choice of new inline 6-cylinder engines.

Eventually, this will include a plug-in hybrid model, though Mazda has not revealed how much electric-only range this variant will provide. We’d guesstimate something in the region of 25-35 miles, which is on par with competitors like the Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV, Toyota RAV4 Prime, and Kia Sorento PHEV. Look for a recharge time of the CX-90 PHEV’s lithium-ion battery pack to take around 2-3 hours.

For the moment, we can only speculate about how the CX-90 will drive, though based on previous experience with Mazda SUVs, the handling promises to be light, direct, and very entertaining. With its new longitudinal inline-6 engine lineup, the platform of the CX-90 lends itself to providing an even better front/rear weight balance, something that should benefit both ride comfort and agility.

As Mazda’s largest and most expensive SUV, the 2023 CX-90 will come with a wide range of standard active safety features, including forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and more.

One area we hope to see a major improvement when moving from the outgoing CX-9 to the new CX-90 is the roominess of the rear seats. The CX-9 had a third row more suitable for kids than adults. We’re hoping the CX-90 is able to carve out more space for occupants in all three rows of seating, but particularly for those seated in the rear.

For SUV shoppers who prioritize cargo room, Mazda is set to introduce the CX-70. Consider this a CX-90, but minus the third row. This is similar to the design and market positioning of the 3-row Honda Pilot and its 2-row mechanical twin, the Passport.

Expect more details about the 2023 Mazda CX-90 soon, potentially in November when Mazda could reveal its newest large SUV during the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show.

2023 MAZDA CX-90 Pricing

We expect the 2023 Mazda CX-90 will pick up where the outgoing CX-9 left off in terms of pricing structure. That means the entry-level CX-90 should carry a sticker price of roughly $35,000 before factoring in any options.

Because Mazda is trying to move slightly upmarket with its SUV range, a top-of-the-line CX-90 could get close to $50,000 when fully optioned and fitted with every available feature.

That’s about $3,000 to $4,000 more than the most expensive version of the CX-9.

KBB Vehicle Review and Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.)

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.

More About How We Rate Vehicles

On October 7, 2021, Mazda announced that it will launch five new SUVs between 2022 and 2023. One of the future high-riding models will be a Mazda CX-90. Here’s what all we know about it so far:

Design & Features

The Mazda CX-90 will be the successor to the CX-9, which Mazda has sold for two generations since 2006. Mazda could give it a more aggressive design than its predecessor with core elements looking similar to the CX-60, which it unveiled in March 2022. Expect a tough yet dignified exterior that heeds to the Japanese notion that less is more.

Inside, the CX-90 should feature a conventional design and modern electronics such as a fully digital instrument cluster, head-up display, and a wide touchscreen infotainment system. One of the main highlights here could be the Mazda Driver Personalization System which identifies the driver using a face recognition system and automatically adjusts the surroundings as per their physique and personal preferences.

Specifications

The Mazda CX-90 will reportedly share the company’s all-new front-engine, rear-wheel drive platform with the CX-60, the brand’s first model available with a plug-in hybrid system. It will be a wide-body midsize SUV with three rows of seats developed primarily for North American markets.

Mazda may offer two CX-90 hybrid variants: mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The mild-hybrid variant could employ an all-new 3.0L Skyactiv-X turbocharged straight-six gas engine, an electric motor (ISG), and a 48-volt battery pack.

The plug-in hybrid variant may have a smaller, 2.5-liter eSkyactiv naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, but a punchier electric motor, and a 355-volt lithium-ion battery pack. In addition to the operating voltage, the energy storage capacity of this battery pack could be much higher, probably 17.8 kWh. The gas engine and electric motor together may deliver more than 325 horsepower. The EPA-est. pure electric range of the CX-90 PHEV could be somewhere between 25 and 30 miles.

Price & Release Date

Mazda plans to start manufacturing the CX-90 units intended for sales in North America by the end of FY2023 (April 2022 – March 2023). Based on the scheduled production timeline, we expect the Mazda CX-90 to go on sale in the U.S. in early 2023. Prices could start somewhere in the USD 37,000-40,000 range.
