Residual information in file slack is always overwritten when a new file is created.
Glossary Terms Show
What is residual Slack? The space between the end of a file and the end of the disk cluster it is stored in. Also called "file slack," it occurs naturally because data rarely fill fixed storage locations exactly, and residual data occur when a smaller file is written into the same cluster as a previous larger file.
What is slack space in a file?Definition(s):
The unused space in a file allocation block or memory page that may hold residual data.
What is file Slack forensics? The most prevalent benefit occurs in the computer forensics field, as file slack allows users to locate files deleted from sectors. Deleting computer files doesn't fully delete them – it just moves them. This provides investigators potential clues concerning the data erased by legal suspects on the hard drive.
Can slack space contain fragments of a previous file? The data storage space that exists from the end of the last sector of the file to the end of the last cluster assigned to the file is called file or cluster slack. As files are deleted and created, it is possible that fragments from the file previously located in that cluster can be recovered.
