Short [hay Short sell] là từ dùng chỉ những hành động bán khống cổ phiếu [bán trước mua sau]. Có nghĩa là một cách kiếm lợi nhuận từ sự tụt giảm giá của một loại chứng khoán như cổ phần hay trái phiếu.
Phần lớn các nhà đầu tư theo lâu dài một khoản đầu tư, hy vọng rằng giá của loại chứng khoán đó sẽ lên. Để thu lợi từ việc giá cổ phiếu đi xuống, người bán khống có thể mượn một lượng chứng khoán và bán nó đi, mong muốn rằng nó sẽ giảm giá trong ít ngày tới để người bán khống có thể mua nó lại với mức giá thấp hơn và hưởng lợi nhuận từ sự chênh lệch giá bán và mua.
Ví dụ, cổ phiếu X hiện đang giao dịch ở mức giá 10.000đ. Người bán khống mượn 10.000 cổ phiếu và bán chúng để thu được 100 triệu đồng. Nếu giá cổ phiếu X sau đó rớt xuống 8.000đ, người bán khống đó sẽ mua lại 10.000 cổ phiếu đó chỉ hết 80 triệu đồng và lãi 20 triệu đồng. Tuy nhiên nếu giá cổ phiếu tăng lên 12.000đ thì người đó phải mua lại 10.000 cổ phiếu hết 120 triệu đồng và bị lỗ 20 triệu đồng.
Bán khống có thể gây ra tình trạng giảm giá chứng khoán trong ngắn hạn và tăng giá trong dài hạn vì khi đến hạn, nhà đầu tư phải mua chứng khoán để hoàn trả số chứng khoán đã bán khống trước đó.
