I'm looking for a new pair of headphones. I've been looking at the Sony MDR-1A, Philips Fidelio M2BT, Sennheiser Momentum and at last the Sony XB950BT, even though these seem a bit too bass-heavy.

Source - I'll mostly be using it with my Samsung Galaxy S6, laptop and PC. I do have an old Xonar card I might put into my PC. Requirements for isolation - As long as it doesn't leak huge amounts of sound and does an ok job of isolating, I'm fine. Preferred tonal balance - I want a good amount of bass, as well as crisp and clear highs. I'm not a huge bass-head, but I like to listen to a lot of bass-heavy music like trap, but also trance, where I want the highs to be as clear as possible. Neutral-sounding headphones are not my thing. Preferred music - I mostly listen to trance, dance, house, EDM, club music, trap and hip hop. Additional information - Price does not matter at all. I'm mostly tempted to go for the Fidelio M2, but I've never owned any on-ear headphones before, so I'm not sure how they feel. I also think they are the best looking headphones, but the MDR-1A looks very comfortable, but not as stylish. If you have any suggestions, please tell me, but I'd prefer to stick to one of the headphones I mentioned above.

EDIT: I'm also sort of considering the Fidelio X1, but it doesn't seem portable at all, and I'd rather not spend so much money on something that I can't fully use for my purposes.

I'm hoping someone sees this and can help me decide! Thanks in advance for any help

For those genres, I think the Yamaha Pro 500 should be on your short list.

Among your listed headphones, the Sony's are probably your best bet (based on your requirements)

Best Luck!

That looks really nice-looking. However, it's on the more expensive side. It's almost twice as expensive as the headphones I mentioned, but I'll definitely check if any of my local stores has them, so I can try them out. Thanks for the reply

Bump. Please cast your votes in the poll.

My vote was for the Sony's. But from what you have described, you will like the momentums. Seriously look at the V-Moda M-100 though. For your tastes and needs, those things will wreck.

*sigh*

I've gotten so many recommendations for the M-100's, but unfortunately there's no online stores in Norway that sells them, and buying from overseas is too expensive

How do you think the bass in the headphones I mentioned compare to the DT770's? That's the only headphone I can examine in contrast.

How do you think the bass in the headphones I mentioned compare to the DT770's? That's the only headphone I can examine in contrast.

DT770 has a 'v-shaped' sound signature (boosted bass and treble) MDR-1A has just a slight boost in the bass, the treble is smooth but not overly dark Momentums are capable headphones with a slight boost in the bass and darkish treble (probably not as comfortable as the others)

V-Moda M100 and Yamaha Pro 500 have powerful bass and yet very good sound quality. The Pro 500 is probably the most balanced between the two. You could also read about the M-Audio Q40

Best Luck!

Ah, I see. I think a v-shaped signature is what I'm looking for.

Do you have more suggestions? They do not sell the M-100 or Q40 in Norway, and the Pro 500 is unfortunately a bit above my budget, even though they seem really nice.

Also, what do you think of the Beats Studio Wireless? I've always cringed when I hear people talk about Beats, but their newer products are apparently pretty good, and because it's so popular, a lot of people sell them used, and finding a good deal is pretty easy. I also want some decent looking headphones, like the Beats and Pro 500 in example.

Thank you very much for helping me, this is very useful!

Maybe you could try the Yamaha Pro 400. I've read somewhere that is not that far from the Pro 500. I think it comes with 2 cables and a carrying case.

Hmm. Perhaps you could pursuade a kind head-fier from the mainland EU (I don't know what it is called. You know what I mean, Germany, France, Spain, etc.) to buy a pair and ship it to you if you pay them. You can also look used on these forums. They regularly go used for ~$200. If you can find someone in Europe, shipping won't kill you.

And the M-100 has a good amount more bass than the DT770 and is far less harsh in the treble, IMO. But I haven't spent a lot of time with the DT770 so take it with a grain of salt.

I'll try to keep an eye out for them at Finn.no (an online store for used goods and such), and maybe if any friends is travelling, I could ask them.

Thank you for the help, it's much appreciated

Sup dude, fellow Swede here.

Your list matched mine pretty much. Was looking for a wireless set of quality headphones - discarded the Sony's pretty quick mostly due to the fit and form.. (didn't like the overly big ear-cups tbh I'm more of a on-ear kinda guy) and also I hear Sony has some issue with apt-x on the BT connectivity, just unconfirmed rumours though. So I went finally for the Fidelio M2's and here's why:

At 1500-2000 kr - The M2's are a total steal. You'll find them on Netonnet or SIBA this week for a slightly reduced price than usual.

Reason for choosing BT wireless headphones are many. You are mainly going to gain some freedom at the cost of quality (but I personally simply hate cord rattle from cables and often they tend to get stuck on all sorts of stuff, I'm a bit clumsy...) but if you're going to choose wireless phones, you should invest some money! The Sennheiser Momentums are quite good actually and give off a very balanced sound for me, but they almost cost the double and that's just not a very good deal considering the corded version is a lot better priced then.

So, the M2BT wins in terms of "best bang for the buck". Sound is not that GREAT actually (treble is grainy) but i don't think they sound any worse than the Sony's - i've read a lot of reviews on them.

If you care about looks... and most do, you'll probably feel just fine walking around with the M2's. Corded sound is marginally better, but insignificant to the untrained ear I think, JUST as long as you connect to an aptX enabled BT source. Most modern smartphones do however sport AptX (but you better google your phone to be sure).

If you want a fair review on the M2BT read up here: http://www.trustedreviews.com/philips-fidelio-m2bt-review

Good luck!

I second to this, the M2BTs are a great sounding pair of headphones for the price. But if you prefer over-ears or simply listen to music mostly at home, I'd definitely go with the Momentums (1st gen).

Don't listen to the people who say that the M2BTs are average at best. Those who say they sound fantastic aren't wrong at all, and they're still among the best, if not the absolute best bluetooth headphones under the 200 dollar range. The M2BT's have a much cleaner, and clearer sound than the much more expensive Studio Wireless. They have better and much clearer mids- and highs, as well as a much more present and clear sub-bass/lower register, compared to the Studios. I own the Studio Wireless myself can assure you that this is the case.

The Fidelios M2BTs might be a bit too bassy for the average listener, but the bass is tight and precise, not everywhere, unlike the one of the Studio, which is all around the place, while also being weaker. The M2BTs manage to produce clear vocals, with a warm and vibrant tone, which sound-wise puts it right there among the best headphones on the market for the average audiophile. Whereas the Studios just drown the vocals, while having a rubbed balance between treble and bass.

I've compared the M2BTs to the M100s, as my cousin owns them. Now they sound fantastic, which they should, at their price-tag and due to being around-ear headphones. Bass-wise the M100 are similar to the M2BTs. They have a punchy tone, but are a bit overwhelming.

So here it comes downt to wether you prefer a warmer tone, or the colder tone of the M100s. Or what looks you're into. Personally I think the M2BTs just look better and very unique. Both are absolutely fantastic for EDM, and RnB and just murder the Studio Wireless 2.0. I can add that my cousin, who is a heavy M100 user was surprised when he listened to my M2BTs.
