Just watched this yesterday on my newly upgraded home theater setup. I've seen it called 11.2 others call it 7.2.4. Seven ground level channels, 2 subwoofers, 4 height speakers. Anyway, even though this movie is from 1986, it's been remixed for Atmos and just as I suspected, it turned out to be a great Atmos demo with lots of jets flying past you, at your level and overhead. The low frequency vibrations of the jet engines are there occasionally in your subs but not overdone. See attached photo, note the fine print at the top - "mixed specifically for Dolby Atmos..."The blu ray is only $14.96. That's a bargain. I guess they've put this out primarily to support and promote the sequel. Hours of special features, much of which is brand new in 4k with recent interviews of the principals discussing the sequel.This movie won Oscars - back when Oscars were awarded for excellence rather than racial and LGBTQ quotas. Best original song winner, nominated for best film editing, best sound, best effects and best sound effects editing. Well deserved. The music was great, especially Take My Breath Away and Danger Zone. The interviews with the editors were particularly interesting. They should have won the Oscar because they put this together from hundreds of hours of raw aerial footage and apparently created much of the story out of thin air (so to speak).Highly recommended.

A fierce flight into Naval piloting!

Director Tony Scott's romantic war drama Top Gun (1986) holds up as a thrilling aerial action movie as well as an earnest coming of age drama. I appreciate Top Gun more every time I revisit it. I used to find it silly and fleeting, but it rings true with a depth about human flaws to pilots and how to overcome adversity. I love when Scott just allows Tom Cruise to sit and ponder if he wants to continue to fly while he's watching a plane screech by one afternoon. Tony Scott has a romantic attitude towards getting in a plane and flying with your friends as much as he nails the perilous sky situations Navy pilots encounter during spinning aerial combat engagements.

Top Gun has stunning shadowy lighting, increasingly affectionate romance, deeper characterization, stellar flight craft, and silly jokes. Tony Scott's stylish direction makes the air feel suspenseful and finds lovely shots of horizons in flight and on the ground. Top Gun is probably Tony Scott's best film after The Hunger. It's a classic. Scott was a fantastic and creative director, who brought a serious drama and riveting directing to Top Gun. May Tony Scott rest in peace.

Tony Scott's Top Gun is entertaining with its sleek and gripping aerial combat filmed with real jets buzzing by at supersonic speeds. Scott's direction during the air combat is gripping as he puts you into the perspective of a jet pilot spinning and maneuvering through the skies. The aerial wide shots are impressive by any standard let alone this all being accomplished in 1986.

Cinematographers Jeffrey L. Kimball and Rick Fichter use striking daylight wide shots and fast panning shots for the plane dogfights. I loved the dark shadows and silhouettes alongside the mesmerizing sunlit lighting. I miss movies using shadows and lights so beautifully. Top Gun looks gorgeous.

Writers Jim Cash, Jack Epps Jr., and Ehud Yonay paint a picture of an arrogant pilot trainee, who must learn to be humble and nice to his girlfriend, safe as a pilot, and a grow up beyond his father's legacy. I love the severity of the consequences for reckless flying that gets Goose killed. You see what it takes to be a top pilot in the Navy as well as how to fly alongside your fellow pilots safely. It's full of lively banter and ridiculous jokes, but the romance plot is actually sweet and sensitive.

Jim Cash's ultra patriotic writing style bringing the audience closer to the perils of Navy aerial missions, while keeping the storytelling character focused. You have to wonder if Tony Scott meant to show essentially all male relationships in the Navy being homoerotic. It is fun to laugh along with Top Gun for the good vibes and comradery. The sincere drama feels moving, while the lighter moments are nearly the stuff of melodrama. All the testosterone fueled machismo is so over the top that Top Gun begins to feel like a parody. I do think it shows the dangers of toxic masculinity and reckless endangerment of other pilots. The jokes are hilarious with the playful rapport between friends being the embodiment of just dudes being dudes. The homoerotic interpretations to the ultra loving statement of "You could be my wingman" is hysterical to me.

Editors Chris Lebenzon and Billy Weber cut with a sleek engrossing feel for the drama and an erratic chaos for the flights. It's disorienting to follow all the aerial combat, but that's also the point to keep it exciting and unpredictable. Sound designers Virginia Cook-McGowan, Julia Evershade, Marshall Winn, Cecelia Hall, George Watters II, Rick Kline, Donald O. Mitchell, Kevin O’Connell, Teri E. Dorman, David E. Stone, Robert Nichols II, Frank Howard, Andrew Patterson, James Cavarretta, Mike Haney, and Robert Winder let jet engines roar loudly and rockets burst in the air. I love the massive noises throughout Top Gun.

John DeCuir Jr.'s production design shows off realistic Navy training quarters and pilot's homes in cozy sets. The inside the pilot's cockpit sets are neat. I liked set decorators Robert R. Benton and Craig Edgar's family pictures in the pilot homes besides all the military gear everywhere. You can the Navy helped fund and supply Top Gun. It's basically military propaganda to recruit pilots into the Navy. You could also declare Top Gun as a patriotic celebration of American excellence in the sky. Visual effects artist William Groshelle's jet explosions and rocket firing looks incredible to this day. The real Navy pilots are insanely skilled pulling off dangerous maneuvers safely.

Composer Harold Faltermeyer creates both romantic tension and action packed suspense with his synth heavy score for Top Gun. I love the 80's synth music throughout Top Gun. Faltermeyer helps make 110 minutes feel like 30 while watching Top Gun. Kenny Loggins' killer synth pop track "Danger Zone" is exhilarating and unforgettable. Loggins' song is as iconic as Top Gun itself. I loved Tony Scott's direction alongside the 1980's music throughout Top Gun. "Take My Breath Away" is a lovely romantic choice for a love theme that repeats before finally playing in full during the love sequence is a masterful show of vision from Scott. Bobbie Read and James W. Tyson's costumes feature sterling white Navy uniforms to cool bomber jackets. I like the natural make-up look from artists Rick Sharp and Scott H. Eddo.

Tom Cruise is excellent as the overly confident pilot in training Maverick, that must overcome difficult missions and comrade death. His brave choice to keep flying, fulfilling his father's heroic legacy, and finding true love is inspiring. One of the best scenes in Top Gun is when Cruise finally can let go of his father's memory as he throws his dad's dog tags overboard. I love Cruise's eye acting as he describes his family dynamic to his girlfriend on their first date. Also, after Goose dies, Cruise's eyes in his helmet during the next flight are haunted and reveal his inner turmoil. Tom Cruise is enthralling, cool, funny, touching, and stellar as Top Gun's protagonist Maverick. Cruise gives Maverick his all to make Top Gun a riveting experience in air and a fascinating character study on the ground.

I really appreciate Anthony Edwards as the amiable Goose. His trusting friendship and total sincerity make Goose feel alive. He is so likable, which is what makes you miss him the most in Top Gun. Kelly McGillis is sultry and stern as Charlotte Blackwood. She's a thoughtful love interest for Tom Cruise's Maverick in Top Gun as she's older with real maturity and an interesting femme fatale glamour. She makes Charlie alluring and fun with a serious side to her that gives her an authentic feel during the debriefing sequences as well as the scenes in which she scolds Maverick. McGillis had great romantic chemistry with Tom Cruise.

Val Kilmer is cool as ever in Top Gun as the professional and intellectual strategist Iceman. His performance is more subtle than Cruise has held up well. Kilmer plays his expert flier with knowledge and calmness while representing Maverick's piloting and personality foil. Kilmer is particularly outstanding when he wants to console Maverick in the locker room after Goose's death. You know he wants to say more than his apologies.

Tom Skerritt's tough mentor figure Viper is full of wisdom and presence. You listen to every word he says with his gravitas. He leaves quite the impression in Top Gun. Likewise, Michael Ironside was born to play the tough commanding officer Jester. Meg Ryan has a nice appearance as the fun loving and devoted wife to Goose named Carole Bradshaw. She is delightful and fiery on screen until her wonderful dramatic grieving when she meets Maverick again after Goose's death. Even Tim Robbins has a cameo supporting role as co-pilot Merlin.

In hindsight, Top Gun is a display of Tony Scott's directorial prowess and ingenuity in depicting aerial combat. Tom Cruise's dramatic range as a leading man Maverick, Kenny Loggins' thrilling soundtrack, and a slew of riveting supporting roles like Val Kilmer's Iceman. Top Gun has aged beautifully. It will always be fun.

I watched the original "Top Gun" when it first came out years ago. I recently purchased "Top Gun Maverick" but am waiting to watch it until I watch the original again so I will be able to track events of a historical nature first. "Maverick" arrived yesterday, so I better make time soon to watch the original first!!

I have watched the 2D version several times. In 3D, it’s a completely different movie. The aerial scenes are simply amazing
I don’t believe that the movie was filmed in 3D, but whatever tech they used to convert it was seamless

Could relate to this military training movie! At 11 my middle brother made me an Honoray Mascot of his platoon, one week before he sailed to Korea! Also sbuscribed the Leaherneck Magazine for me. At 26, I applied for Warrant Officer & Helicopter training. I was older than all my instructors, but they were great! Like in the movie, there were a lot of trials and tribulations, but all managed to make it. Since being older many came to me for advice!

One of the best films of the 80's, which put so many newcomers onto the big stage and set up some long term lucrative careers for its stars. Great soundtrack to accompany it, and you'll be tapping away to those catchy tunes.

Might be seen as a bit mighty USA, bastion of truth, right and goodness versus nasty, dark Russian's but move on past that and accept it was a film of its time.

Bought for my wife for Christmas present, as she has never seen it...one of the few people in the northern hemisphere not to have seen it. She even admitted to 'enjoying it'...praise indeed.

Seen this film more than 20 times, and still enjoy it...Blu-ray certainly enhanced the viewing experience and at £5, a real bargain

The film stars Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt. It also marked the debut of actor Adrian Pasdar. Cruise plays Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He and his Radar Intercept Officer, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Edwards) are given the chance to train at the US Navy's Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California.
Top Gun was released on May 16, 1986. Top Gun is an aviation based action film from 1986 (the year I was born) directed by Tony Scott (brother of Ridley), produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. The movie is based on Top Guns by Ehud Yonay and scripts written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. The stars are a baby faced action junky Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Tom Skerritt and Kelly McGillis. The film is centred around Tom Cruise's character Maverick. He gets the chance to join a top naval aviation school alongside his partner Goode (Anthony Edwards). This results in many exciting scenes of planes, romance and sweaty men parading in the sand.

Anyone who lived through the 1980s or simply owned a lot of VHS back in the day knew of Top Gun or at least it's awesome theme song. The film had a lot of iconic scenes and an absolutely killer soundtrack. It was hard to avoid for a long time. I hadn't actually been a fan of the film growing up. I could happily enjoy it in passing but had not watched it in a fair few years. I saw the film on sale for a fiver and thought it was a good way to combat the endless dreary junk that Hollywood is churning out now. I wasn't wrong. I found the film to be a great fun time. This of course is all down to the previously mentioned plane porn, music and great performances from the whole cast.

The one thing that really sticks out to me is just how well everything is shot. It doesn't matter what scene it is, there's always something going on in the back ground. Whether it's planes doing flyby's or just the natural sunlight causing some beautiful lighting. The bluray copy I bought looks really good. The colours were strong, the picture was sharp and crystal clear. It has aged a lot better than many '80s movies that have seen a re-release. The surround sound was also quite entertaining. Especially in the more intense flight sequences.

Top Gun is an extremely refreshing movie to watch with the state of modern cinema. Everything in today's world needs to be dark, edgy and equipped a message so strong that you'll physically vomit from it being forced down your throat. Top Gun is a simple tale, one that it told very well and is really exciting to watch. If you're wanting a fun macho fist pumping movie to watch with your chums, this is an easy recommendation. Forget all the modern drivel and travel back to the '80s. When the world was a better place to live.

...Write a review. That being said, what is there to write about a high octane* thrill-a-minute, homeoerotic, 80s jet-fest that hasn't already been said? It has the everlasting Tom Cruise doing what he generally does best and more lens filters than an influencers photography seminar.

Now, if you happen to have a fairly decent home cinema with some sort of sub-woofery type thing, then select the DTS sound mix, crank up the volume, nail your furniture down, grease up your dadbod and soar away on the Highway To The Danger Zone. It will Take your breath away.

*ironically, jet fuel has quite a low octane rating. Typically around 15, whereas the stuff you stick in your car is 90-100!
