Over the past few years I have been steadily building my familiarity with the Fuji XF system. I’ve spent time with five different cameras . During that time, I’ve come to the conclusion that the real strength of the Fuji platform is not found in the large, premium primes and zooms, many of which are priced like and sized similarly to full frame equivalent lenses. No, the strength is in the premium but compact F2 (and, in a few occasions F2.8) primes like the Fujinon XF 50mm F2 WR that we are considering today. Fuji has a sometimes bewildering lens scheme where often the F1.4 (or even F1.2) primes lack weather sealing and have slower, noisier focus motors while the smaller F2 primes have both weather sealing and superior focus systems. There are a number of the larger aperture primes that are, frankly, due an update to modern standards. Many of the F2 primes, like this one, however, are a bit newer and actually function better. Even the brand new Fujinon XF 50mm F1.0 WR lens that I just reviewed had a somewhat primitive focus system, which only adds to my feeling that the strength of the platform is maintaining a small, light, and portable form factor that also allows for nice image quality.

The XF 50mm F2 has a quality build, with premium materials, internal weather sealing, and a manual aperture ring. Everything functions well, though as is typical, I find that the manual focus ring takes a lot of rotations to make major focus changes an is better reserved for finetuning focus.

The XF 50mm F2 is solid optically, though not exceptional in any way. It produces nice looking images, however, and worked well during my tests. Feel free to just look at the images below, or you can watch my thorough video review by clicking the video below.
