SXSW 2023 music lineup
THE SHORT VERSION Show Ten days of the cutting edge in music, film, tech and comedy. Come to party hard, move fast, and break things with the big shots. It’s a music festival! It’s a film festival! It’s a tech conference! It’s a comedy festival! No, it’s South by Southwest. Or, South By, for short. SXSW is a mega-event that packs all four aforementioned festivals, each huge in their own right, into one week, in one city, under one name. It’s become the tastemaker of tomorrow, the preeminent gathering of all things cultural and cutting edge. Lena Dunham was discovered here, as was Fred Armisen. Everything Everywhere All at Once premiered here. So did Bridesmaids, 21 Jump Street and The Hand’s Maid Tale. Twitter gained some of its earliest attention here, and Mark Zuckerberg’s cold interview responses made headlines here. In short, anyone who’s anyone (or who wants to be someone) in tech, music, and media comes here to network and, to use the tech parlance, move fast and break things. Panels on current and future issues, artist speakers, and movie cast Q&A’s number in the hundreds. And the music lineup rivals that of any festival. Dolly Parton, Beck and Shawn Mendes were a few of 2022’s standouts. Kendrick Lamar has played SXSW three times. Lizzo, four. Put all of this in the renowned party city of Austin, and it’s one hell of a week. NOTE: 2023 lineup not yet released The Specs
SXSW returned in-person in 2022. SXSW is going global in 2023, but before it hits Australia, it'll happen in Austin for the 37th time. On Wednesday, October 19, the conference announced an initial lineup with almost 200 artists who will perform from March 13-18, 2023. "BILLIE EILISH" rapper Armani White, from Philadelphia, will appear, as will L.A.-based French Korean American indie-pop songstress spill tab, Atlanta post-punk band Algiers, Canadian singer-songwriter Julie Doiron, and hundreds more. Additionally, a plethora of Texas-based artists have been announced, including Houston rapper Fat Tony, Dallas-based R&B-inflected indie act Ariel + the Culture, and Austin favorites like TC Superstar, Die Spitz, and Jad Fair and the Placebos. In a press release, SXSW Vice President James Minor said that this first batch of announced artists is just a preview of what will come, and hinted at a wide-ranging slate for 2023. "You’ll find everything you’ve come to expect at SXSW," Minor said, "from rising hip-hop stars, buzzy indie-rock acts, and Latin pop to the latest from the British underground jazz scene, all sitting nicely next to things you never thought could have existed — a beatboxing Japanese Zen Buddhist monk and a punk-embracing marimba group from Mexico, for example." SXSW returned in-person in 2022 for the first time since 2019. The 2020 conference was canceled and the 2021 edition was conducted virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. By all accounts, the return was a success. The fest, to many, felt like a scaled-down version of the swelling behemoth. It made getting into film premieres, concerts, and other events a bit easier than in years' past. Economically, revenues were down compared to previous iterations, but even with a markedly smaller SXSW, the conference had a $280 million impact on the city. Hotel bookings generated almost $2 million in hotel occupancy tax revenue for Austin, and spending was up 25 percent per person compared to 2019, the most recent in-person SXSW. The South by Southwest Music Festival has revealed the first round of performers for its 37th annual celebration, taking over Austin, Texas, from March 13-18, 2023. The full list of artists appears below, but highlights include South Korean artists Balming Tiger and Beenzino, Calle 13’s iLe (Puerto Rico), Ladaniva (France), Max Cooper (England), Mightmare, Núria Graham (Spain), the Orielles (England), Otoboke Beaver (Japan), RVG (Australia), Son Rompe Pera (Mexico) and dozens more. Like previous years, the festival will host multiple events spotlighting the 191 emerging talents on the list — with this being the first of several announcements for its planned showcases that will span six nights. Showcase presenters for the 2023 iteration include Anniversary Group, Atomic Music Group, Athens in Austin, British Music Embassy, Don Giovanni Records, Fire Records, FOCUS Wales, Gorilla vs Bear, Jazz re:freshed Outernational, Pop Montreal, M for Montreal, Music From Ireland, New West Records, Space Agency and Wide Days Scotland.
