What date is the Met Gala 2023?

Mark your calendars: Next year's Met Gala will fall on May 1, 2023. While seven months may seem like a long way away, it's actually quick as lightning in the fashion world, where everyone works months or years in advance. The theme of the year's biggest party will be "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," referencing the lines of Lagerfeld's famous sketches, which will be presented next to his designs. 

"At its heart, the exhibition will look at the evolution of Lagerfeld's two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional garments," the Met's curator in charge, Andrew Bolton, told Vogue. "And what's fascinating to have discovered: I always thought that his drawings were very spontaneous and almost impressionistic. But they were in truth extremely precise, almost mathematical. We couldn't see it because we are not trained, but his premiers knew down to the millimeter what each line meant. It was almost a secret code, a language shared between him and those premiers, that only they could fully decipher."

The exhibition will feature work across all of the houses he worked for: Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous brand. Mark your calendars for the first Monday in May: The theme for the 2023 Met Gala has been revealed.

On Sept. 30, organizers of fashion's biggest night announced the upcoming theme, which will be celebrating the work of Karl Lagerfeld, the former creative director of Chanel who passed away in 2019 from complications of pancreatic cancer.

According to the Met, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," will "explore the artistic methodology and stylistic vocabulary of Karl Lagerfeld's designs through recurring themes across more than 65 years, from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019." The 2023 Costume Institute Benefit, also known as the Met Gala, will take place on May 1. 

The upcoming exhibition will be open to the public from May 2023 to July 2023 and will feature 150 of Lagerfield's designs from his time as creative director of Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, Balmain and Patou, as well as items from his eponymous label.

"I was so fascinated by how they communicated [with Lagerfeld], which was by drawings," Bolton told CNN Sept. 30. "Every single design in his life was a sketch. And when I saw the drawings, I thought, 'These are so charming, so whimsical, so impressionistic.' But what I didn't realize was that they contained really precise information—about a shoulder line or the length of a sleeve. And [his staff] knew exactly what this line meant or what that dot meant, and they could decode it."

The co-chairs of the 2023 Met Gala—which last year included Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds—have not been announced.

When Is the 2023 Met Gala?

The event will take place on Monday, May 1, 2023. The gala traditionally takes place annually on the first Monday in May. The only time that changed was during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it was moved from May to September in 2021. The event was cancelled altogether in 2020 due to the outbreak.

What Is the Theme of the 2023 Met Gala?

The theme will be “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” in tribute to the late Chanel creative director, who died at age 85 in February 2019 after a secret battle with pancreatic cancer. He was still producing collections for the iconic label up until his death.

“Karl Lagerfeld was a regular attendee at The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute, from the Seventh on Sale benefit in 1991 to ‘Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty’ in 2011 — and of course for the Chanel exhibition in 2005,” Vogue announced on September 30, 2022.

“And yet, says the Costume Institute’s Wendy Yu Curator in Charge, Andrew Bolton, said, ‘Karl never tired of telling me that fashion did not belong in a museum. When we worked on the Chanel show together, he was incredibly generous in what he lent, but he was completely disinterested in the exhibition itself! He would say, ‘Fashion is not art — fashion belongs on the street, on women’s bodies, on men’s bodies,’” the article continued.

Who Are the 2023 Met Gala Co-Chairs?

The lucky celebrities have not yet been named, but the stars chosen will reportedly be ones who were particularly close to Karl during his prolific designing career. Actress and Chanel Ambassador Kristen Stewart was one of his many muses, as were Penélope Cruz, Margot Robbie, Diane Kruger and Blake Lively, though the Gossip Girl alum just co-chaired the event with husband Ryan Reynolds in 2022.
