LONDON — The 2023 Eurovision Song Contest will be staged in the English city of Liverpool, the BBC said Friday, after Britain was asked to hold the event on behalf of designated host country Ukraine.

The birthplace of The Beatles beat Glasgow, Scotland, the other U.K. finalist. In all, seven British cities had applied to hold the pan-continental music competition. The 2023 Eurovision final will be held on May 13.

Ukraine won the right to host the pop extravaganza when its entry, folk-rap ensemble Kalush Orchestra, won this year's contest. Britain's Sam Ryder came second.

Organizers concluded it was too risky to stage the event in Ukraine, so the 2023 contest went to Britain, which says the event will be a celebration of Ukrainian culture and creativity.

BBC Director-General Tim Davie said Liverpool, "the undisputed capital of pop music," would be "an amazing host." British Prime Minister Liz Truss said on Twitter that "Liverpool will put on an unforgettable show which celebrates the rich culture and creativity of Ukraine."

Kalush Orchestra said it was pleased with the choice.

"Playing in the same place that The Beatles started out will be a moment we'll never forget!" the band said. "Although we are sad that next year's competition cannot take place in our homeland, we know that the people of Liverpool will be warm hosts and the organizers will be able to add a real Ukrainian flavor to Eurovision 2023 in this city."

Founded in 1956 to help unite a continent scarred by World War II, Eurovision has grown to include more than 40 countries, including non-European nations such as Israel and Australia.

Organizers strive to keep pop and politics apart — banning overtly political symbols and lyrics — but global tensions have often imposed themselves on the contest. Russia was kicked out of this year's competition because of its invasion of Ukraine.

Ahead of Eurovision 2022, the BBC handed the reigns over to TaP Music — the company behind Ellie Goulding and Lana del Rey, to choose its Eurovision song and artist. Now, following their successful launch of Sam Ryder into the Eurovision stratosphere, the company has been invited back to do it all over again for the 2023 song contest.

“We are thrilled that Ben Mawson and Ed Millett plus the team at TaP will once again bring their unrivalled expertise to work with the BBC and BBC Studios to find an act and song to represent the UK at Eurovision,” says the BBC’s commissioning editor Rachel Ashdown.

“I hope we can find another artist who will not only be a brilliant ambassador for Eurovision but like Sam will sing their head off with a stand out song.”

Ben Mawson and Ed Millett from TaP Music spoke as one, issuing this statement:

“TaP are very excited to be back working with the BBC to select the UK entry for Eurovision 2023. Last year we wanted to change the narrative around the UK and Eurovision to something much more positive. We focused on what Eurovision is all about — we found a brilliant artist, an unforgettable song and an incredible person in Sam Ryder – we’re so proud of his fantastic success, coming 2nd in the competition and then achieving a number 1 single.”

Prior to confirming Sam Ryder as the Eurovision 2022 artist and singer, TaP released his single “SPACE MAN,” allowing the song to get air time and marinate in the minds of fans. This let the public get to know the song without any Eurovision-related branding (and, let’s face it, without the stigma that had, for so many years, been attached to British entries at home). It’s not clear if they’ll pursue a similar strategy this year.

TaP’s stable of artists is vast and rich, with names like Chelcee Grimes, Dope Lemon, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, London Grammar and more. Who stands out to you? Let us know in the comments box below!
