Onkyo a 9150 review what hifi năm 2024

Wonderful unit! Better than the Emotiva TA100. DAC better than the Topping D30. Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2019

Using the Chane A5.4, JBL Studio 530 and Focal 706 for testing.

I've used the Yamaha V383 for a little over a year with dozens of speakers. It was good enough for me that I didn't feel the need to upgrade, especially after using the Outlaw RR2160 with the Wharfedale Denton and Ascend Sierra 2 and not being impressed with the small sound quality improvements. Recently after ditching my dual subs, I figured having an AVR (mainly kept for bass managment) was sorta pointless. So I first bought the TA100. Gorgeous piece of equipment, but the sound was very disappointing. I actually preferred my V383 to the TA100. The center image was stronger and the detail came through better. Otherwise, they sounded similar enough that I couldn't justify the $400. After ditching that, I picked up the 9150 for $350 not expecting too much.

The build is quite solid. Knobs feel good, terminals are of high quality and there are a plethora of inputs. Seriously, 4 digital inputs? Awesome! I'm using 3 of the 4 where as many other integrated amps I've seen only have 2. Pre out and line out also included. I love having the two sets of speaker terminals too, something the A9110 doesn't have (no DAC either). Very convenient for comparing two sets of speakers.

Listening, right away I could tell a difference between it and the V383. The 9150 had substantially more separation and detail. The best way I can describe it is the V383 sounded compressed and restrained, where as the 9150 was like opening the windows and letting all the sound through. Soundstage increased too. Already impressed, I decided to single out the DAC and put it against the well-reviewed, $120 Topping D30. Again, I was shocked that the internal DAC in the 9150 sounded better. Sorta like I was listening to bluetooth through the D30 and an actual CD through the 9150's (even though I used a CD transport for both). D30 was more compressed, 9150 was more spacious and detailed. I was absolutely not expecting to hear a difference between DACs, but there it was.

I also have the Cambridge CXA60 to compare to. I'd say they are very comparable and I'd be happy with either one. The 9150 is a bit more sweet/warm and the CXA60 has a bit more bite and high-end presence. I want to say the CXA60 has slightly better details and separation, but the 9150 has slightly better vocals... although I'm not entirely confident I'd consistently distinguish the two in a blind test. I do love the remote feel of the CXA60 and it is indeed a beautiful and well-made unit. I think the CXA60 would be a great pairing with warmer sounding speakers (like Wharfedales) and the 9150 with brighter speakers. However, I feel the 9150 is easily the better value of the two at $350 vs $750.

I see some complaints about its 30W per channel at 8ohms rating. So, is it loud enough? With the Chane A5.4 which are rated at 92db, I have no qualms whatsoever. For music listening, I'm only around 9 o'clock on the dial and movies at around 12 o'clock. I'm in a medium sized bedroom sitting about 7ft from the speakers and I've never thought about needing more power. Especially for low-level listening, it's easier to finely tune the volume. With my harder to drive Studio 530's that are rated at 86db at 6ohms, I still get plenty of volume. The highest I've gone is 12 o'clock when I was blasting the Interstellar soundtrack, otherwise I'm about 10 o'clock for most music. So if you are using less sensitive speakers and trying to fill a vlarge space or listen at very loud volumes, perhaps the power wouldn't suit your needs. Otherwise, I'm finding the 30W to be more than plenty.

Lastly, this unit is a GREAT pairing with Onkyo's 7030 CD player! The remote will be able to control both units (including powering on and off) and the width of the units are exactly the same (17 1/8") for a pleasant looking stack of equipment.
