MacBook Air 2015 battery replacement cost

Yesterday, Apple revealed it would expand its Self Service Repair program to let you fix your own MacBooks, and today the program is here. You can now download full repair manuals for your 2021 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros and the 2020 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air — and shop for parts you might need.

But what will Apple actually let you buy, and how much will you really have to pay? That’s not obvious until you enter your serial numbers and root around the company’s entire store — so we did it for you.

Many prices seem (relatively) generous! Others, not so much. You can’t just replace your own battery or keyboard on a MacBook Pro, for example! You have to buy the entire top lid that comes with that and other parts preattached, and it’ll cost you more than twice the $199 that Apple charges for a battery replacement.

Apple spokesperson Patrick Leahy confirmed to The Verge that a battery replacement part will eventually be available, but wouldn’t say when. Admittedly, your 2021 battery shouldn’t be wearing out just yet. No word on keyboard or speakers, either.

The battery, speakers, microphone, and keyboard are fixed to the top case of 2021 MacBook Pros.

And while you can replace just the battery on your 2020 M1 MacBook Air, you’ll have to spend $39 — the same price as a full set of keycaps — to replace broken keys on your function row. That might be because Apple ships seven sets of Fn keycaps at a time:

That’s a lot of function row keycaps.

The motherboard prices are particularly interesting. Not only will Apple not let you upgrade to a higher-end board, the company is dramatically incentivizing you to return the original part. It expects you to lay out as much as $4,222 for a new logic board — ouch at having that on my credit card — but you’ll get the vast majority of it back upon return. You should wind up paying $588 for a 16-inch MacBook Pro board, $500 for a 14-inch or 13-inch MBP board, or $368 for an M1 Air board, no matter how loaded it is.

Not an exhaustive list; these are some of the most popular configs.

Lastly, here’s a list of the optional tools and some secondary parts you might need:

You can also opt for Apple’s $49 tool rental — if you’re willing to sign away its whole purchase price in the event you don’t return it within seven days. (This nearly got me in trouble when I used one to repair my iPhone, as my parts arrived days after the kit, and even though I sent it back in time, Apple initially reported it missing.)

You can find a list of everything that comes with the MacBook tool rental at the bottom of this webpage. Interestingly, only the 2020 MacBook kits come with big, heavy special tools like display and battery presses.

Update August 24th, 12:07PM ET: Added Apple confirmation that the battery will eventually be sold separately.

This is going to be an easy review. After getting a pop-up message about a week ago saying that my laptop battery was severely degraded and should be replaced I contacted Apple support via telephone on Saturday morning. The Apple support representative confirmed that Apple could change my battery for $129 in the Apple store. The representative asked me if I’d like to set up an appointment. I said yes let’s do it. There happened to be an appointment available later that afternoon at an Apple store which was about a 1 hour drive away. After arriving at the Apple Store, on time for my appointment, an Apple representative spent 25 minutes running diagnostics on my laptop only to tell me what I already knew, that my laptop was in pristine condition other than a degraded battery. He confirm that the batteries were $129 installed but said he would have to check to see if there was any in stock. After waiting another 10 minutes he came out and said he didn’t have any batteries and he would have to order it. I explain to the Apple representative how disappointed I was that I drove an hour under the impression that I could get my laptop fixed. So the representative asked if I’d like him to call other stores. I said sure and gave him two other stores to call and check for me. The representative went in the back room, came out about 10 minutes later and said that the first door did not have any and would have to order it as well. I asked him about the second store and he said he hadn’t checked. You can probably imagine my frustration at this point. I asked him to go check the next-store. After making me wait again he came out and said the second store didn’t have any either. The Apple representative then asked me if he could set me up for an install appointment and he would order the battery. I asked him how long it would take to get the battery. He said it could be two days, two weeks or two months. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I told him no thanks and I left the store. I decided at that point to search Amazon for the MacBook battery and found this one to my surprise. I added the battery to my Amazon shopping cart, and made the 1 hour drive back home. I didn’t immediately purchase the battery because I wanted to read some reviews first. So this morning I got up read a couple reviews, watched a couple of the videos, and was convinced that this was a project I was willing to conquer. I went to my Amazon shopping cart and click the “buy now“ button. The message said if I purchased within the next 17 minutes I would get same-day Amazon locker delivery. Of course I purchased. I got a text message mid afternoon on Sunday that the battery had arrived. I went to go pick it up from the Amazon locker. It was well packed. I open the box. Everything was there. It came with two magnetic screwdrivers. Extra screws. New rubber feet for the bottom of the laptop if I needed them. And a clear vinyl keyboard protector which was a nice added gift even though I don’t need it. Everything seemed straight forward. I completely power down the laptop. Flipped it over and started taking out the screws. I carefully set them on the provided sponge pad, in the same pattern that they came out of the laptop so I wouldn’t mix up screws. Surprisingly the back cover came off pretty easily with no extra effort or prying once the screws were out. The battery also came out with little effort once the screws were out. I had light traces of dust around the vent of the laptop case which I cleaned out with a can of compressed air before putting the laptop back together. From start to finish it took me less than 10 minutes. This took into account that it was my first time, I was being extra careful, and I took time to clean the inside of the laptop. When I got everything back together. I flipped it over powered it up and went into the system information app and clicked on “power”. It showed that the battery came 71% charged, was operating normally, and had more amp hour capacity than the OEM battery. This was an extremely easy install. Once I run the laptop on the battery for a few days I will update this review with information about the battery life in general performance of the battery. As for the price and the easy install, I definitely give it 5 out of 5 stars.

I've replaced MAC Book batteries before and had good results. This was a relatively easy battery to install and I've been happy with the drastically improved battery life and performance. I will give a word of advice to anyone attempting to install this battery this kit includes the battery, both screw drivers needed to open the laptop and remove the battery, additional screws, and requires you to disassemble the bottom of your MAC Book Air and remove a few screws on the battery along with disconnecting the battery. This is not a plug and play battery like for a flashlight. Disassembly is required. If you are not comfortable with this find someone you trust who is even the slightest handy and the battery can easily be replaced. The only thing the jury is still out on is the age of this replacement battery. While it is "brand new" and comes with a 1 year warranty, when running the program coconut battery to verify the battery's performance and age the battery appears to have been made in 2015 and my MAC Book Air was made in 2017 so this battery appears to be older than my laptop. However, for $50 and about 10 minutes of work I have a good working battery with a 1 year warranty. As of writing this review, I'm very pleased with this purchase and wish I had replaced my failing battery a lot sooner.

I am trying to get my early 2015 MacBook Air to last a bit longer (although its days are numbered as it didn't make the IOS 13 cut).

Before I replaced it, my battery would show plenty of charge and then just shut off. That problem is gone and the battery life is as good as it ever was.

The replacement is easy. The purchase included the tools, new screws (in case you lose some?), and even four new black round things (feet?) for the bottom of the case. I'm really happy with the purchase.

Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 14, 2022

I removed some screws with the included screwdrivers, pulled out the battery connecter, removed a few more screws, lifted the old battery out, placed in the old batteries, then did the reverse of the first three steps in reverse order. My old Macbook Air can now function as a laptop again, and can finally move out from my desktop. While I am not sure how long this battery will last, I am sure this was a lot easier and cheaper than going through Apple.

I took my MacBook Air to a pc repair shop; they were going to charge me $250. I bought the replacement battery and installed it myself. It took me less than 30 minutes and saved over $200.

The most important thing is that it's still working. I was pleased with myself and with the youtube videos I watched a few times showing me how to change the battery myself.

Rating battery life on a new purchase doesn't make a lot of sense. But it comes with a one year warranty which gives me the impression that it is likely intended to last at least a few years. For the price and ease of replacement, that would be long enough. I've worked on iPhones for years due to my children being a bit rough on them. Working on Apply products is not for the faint of heart but this battery swap is quite likely the easiest repair that can be done on an Apple product. So I'm happy with the product and hopeful as to it's longevity.

Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 19, 2022

After trying 2 other batteries from other vendors that wouldn't charge after installing. I found this battery with extra screws and drivers that fit made installation a breeze. The price is very reasonable and Im very satisfied with this product. Plus they offer a warranty...

3.0 out of 5 stars It's not too bad but it isn't great

Comes with all the tools you need, but honestly, I won't use free or cheap tools when the tolerances are so tight so I used a decent set I had. Well packaged. Comes with some nice extras for tarting up an old laptop.

The performance isn't bad at all to start with, but I'm seeing a rapid decline in performance after a few months of use. I followed the cycling instructions that accompanied the battery. I even had a total power loss whilst on battery - there was no warning that the battery was running low and the device didn't try to shut down or sleep; power just failed. This battery is nowhere near as good as the OEM one, but, as Apple don't supply these this is a decent way to extend the life of an old Mac. Mine is now 11 years old and still going.

I was hoping to use this to extend the lifespan of my Mac and use it for business stuff. But, it seems like I am going to need to buy a new laptop anyway. It's a shame but I can still use this one for personal use, watching videos whilst cooking, etc.

I'm going to try booting to a Linux install and see if that reports the battery life more accurately.

Summary: Yes it works, yes it's better than a ten year old OEM battery. But it's nowhere near as good, life rapidly declines over the first few months and it possibly has issues maintaining a stable voltage.

Next day delivery . No special reason to buy this particular battery but mostly v. good reviews. Middle range price wise. Comes with all necessary tools for fitting. Other people say 15 minutes to do but took me 30+. Not difficult but needs care and keep note which screws go where. To lift base after screws out it says to use crowbar! (not provided but sharp knife under hinge plate will work). No charge but went to 100% without any problem. Has brought Book Air back to original performance - bright and fast. Old battery did 887 cycles since early 2014 and will be pleased if this one does half as well. Cannot say how this compares with other models but difficult to see how they can be any better. Only caution is that early days although I believe it carries a good warranty - 24months?

I am normally one to leave these things to professionals but was reluctant to spend a fortune on my ageing Mac when I would rather put that money towards a new one if needed.

After watching a video, I was reasonably confident that I could do this despite never touching the inside of a computer before. That said, it was relatively easily. The hardest bit was definitely putting the screws back on the battery part but still easy enough. Also attaching the connector was stress free.

All seems to be working fine. My Mac wouldn’t charge at all with the old battery in and this charged to 100% pretty quickly. Time will tell how quickly it lasts but so far I’m happy.
